A Chase Pilot's Story

  • Navy studies indicated strike aircraft survived well

with colored paint jobs even using bright colors

  • First few production 147SK birds had camouflage

paint jobs but later deliveries used glossy black

  • Chase pilots assigned to unmanned recce flights

because of a problem later traced to poor E2B remote control antenna pattern

  • Chase pilot had chased a black drone earlier and had

no problem following it through its mission

  • Same pilot chased a camouflage grey vehicle and

complained he could not see it in the grey skies over Vinh unless he was very close

the flight deck

  • BGM-34C booster armed alert

c JOG System Engineering 103A-17

slide-18
SLIDE 18
  • 10. Destructive Design Change
  • Ground launchers had to have an engine inlet scoop

to avoid engine stagnation during run up to launch rpm

  • One designed into Model 147SK launcher
  • Model 147SK vehicle used ASROC booster because
  • f greater weight than BQM-34A
  • On first launch, ASROC booster blast tore the inlet

scoop completely off from the launcher

  • Decision to eliminate scoop schedule driven

c JOG System Engineering 103A-18

  • 11. A Hard Sale
  • Top marketeer goes to Israel to make unmanned

aircraft sale

  • Golf courses
  • Pyramids
  • Please leave
  • Two field engineers to the rescue – one of whom had

been told to leave OL-20 before the sun went down in the beginning of this story

slide-20
SLIDE 20
  • 12. Misunderstood Humor
  • Model 147SK first launch

– Engine exhaust impingement on ASROC booster misjudged – Mark on booster telling direction of exhaust misalignment not clearly understood – Interesting launch trajectory – Admiral's new red Cadillac

  • Model 124I first launch

– Launcher position at Bir Gif Gaffa – Launch trajectory disappointing but hilarious to some - "We may have overcompensated a little."

Ryan field engineer

  • First launch of new Model 147J low altitude photo

reconnisance aircraft from DC-130 in flight test

  • Program Manager goes on flight with Ryan field

engineer

  • Field engineer draws his parachute
  • At launch the bird took off the DC-130 number 3

engine

  • Program Manager, who did not draw a chute, had the

field engineer's chute on very quickly
