What is Relay for Life?

  • Relay for Life is an annual event for the

American Cancer Society

  • It began in 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a

surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran around a track for 24‐hours to raise money for the ACS.

  • Over the 25 years since, Relay has grown into

a world‐wide event, with more than 3.5 million participants in various communities.

  • Coles County sponsors a local

Relay for Life every year.

What is our district’s involvement?

  • Relay has been a great way for our district to

give back to the community.

  • For the past six years, MCUSD #2 has been one
  • f the largest teams at the Coles County Relay

for Life event.

  • This year, over 125 members
  • f our district came to

Peterson Park to support the great cause, remember loved

  • nes, and celebrate survivors.

What were some other ways individuals participated this year?

  • MCUSD #2 team members:

– Donated items to a Kickoff Raffle, – Pledged payroll deductions, – Gave individual donations, – Attended a Holiday Bazaar fundraiser, – Purchased team t‐shirts, – Purchased luminaries, – Purchased wall signs, – Donated silent auction items, – Walked the track at Peterson Park, & – Some even stayed up all night, earning our team the “Most Spirited Award”!

  • Jamie Willis, MMS Art Teacher and

Illinois Art Educator of the Year, designed this year’s t‐shirt. 185 were purchased, for a contribution total of nearly $400.

  • $1,865.00 worth of donations were made through payroll

deductions.

  • Silent auction items earned over $300.
  • The Holiday Bazaar made an additional $500.
  • Jackson Avenue Coffee Shop donated a portion of their proceeds

from a Saturday sale.

  • Many individuals made additional contributions.
