The plastic waste that goes into the oceans every year is enough to fill five shopping bags for every foot of shoreline in the world In 1977 the Hawaii legislature banned the sale of beverages in plastic containers in order to reduce litter in that tourist-oriented state, to reduce the archipelago's solid waste handling difficulties, and to encourage recycling. In 1979 the ban was overturned after lobbying from the oil industry Half of all the plastic that has ever existed was made in the last 13 years
