Preschool perspectives via SDQTs

check/b4-school-check-information-early-learning-services

  • The SDQ-T asks for teacher’s observations, using their professional

judgement, about a child’s interactions as the child participates in the early childhood education environment.

  • The B4 School Check is an opportunity for health professionals and early

education service providers to work with parents and caregivers to ensure a child can reach their potential.

SLIDE 12

The SDQ tool:

Is made up of 5 scales: 1) Emotional symptoms: 5 items 2) Conduct problems: 5 items 3) Hyperactivity: 5 items 4) Peer problems: 5 items

The 4 scales above are added together to generate a total difficulties score.

5) Prosocial behaviour: 5 items

Prosocial score is not added to the total difficulties score

slide-13
SLIDE 13

An impact supplement:

The second page of the SDQ asks the person filling

  • ut the questionnaire whether they think the child

has a problem. If so, enquires further about

  • Chronicity
  • Distress
  • Social impairment
  • Burden to others
slide-14

Discussion - what could cause issues?

1) Emotional symptoms 2) Conduct problems 3) Hyperactivity 4) Peer problems 5) Prosocial behaviour

s/w preschool teacher regarding conduct, behavioural issues and high total score. Preschool is working with mum. Mum says that those behaviours don't happen at home. But that the child does mimic behaviours of older brother who has recently been diagnosed as autistic. Preschool has a plan to observe, document and manage behaviour for a month, then reassess with family.

SDQT’s – reminders

  • Check SDQT for results (and VHT) prior to completing B4 SC - so you can

discuss these with parents while they are there. May help to reenforce existing referrals, or to inform potential referrals

  • You can phone the preschool to discuss any of your/parental concerns
  • You can recommend to families that they discuss with the preschool
  • EG – preschool needs parental request/consent to initiate interventions

such as toileting, or for referrals. Communicate with preschool

  • When posting SDQT to preschool, you could add a compliments slip with

your details and a request for the preschool to complete and return
