अनतशां ananta-śāstraṃ - Textual knowledge is endless; ब वेदतं bahu veditavyaṃ

  • much is there to be known; अप कालो alpaḥ ca kālo – time is limited; बहव िवाः

bahavaḥ ca vighnāḥ - the obstacles are many; यत् सारभूतं yat sārabhūtaṃ - whatever is the

essence; तद् उपािसतं tad-upāsitavyaṃ - that has to be followed; हंसो यथा haṃso yathā – just as a swan; ीरम् इव kṣīram iva – in the case of milk; अबुिमम् aṃbu-miśram – mixed with water.

सवेषु िवैव मारनुमम् । आहायवाद् अनघवाद् अयवात् च सवदा ।।

सवेषु sarva-dravyeṣu – Among all types of wealth; सवदा sarvadā – at all times; िवा एव vidyā eva– knowledge alone; अनुमम् anuttamam – is unparalleled; आः āhuḥ – (people)

say; अहायवाद् āhāryatvād – because it cannot be stolen; अनघवाद् anarghatvād – as it cannot be valued; अयवात् akṣayatvāt – because it does not diminish.

वगृहे पूयते मूखः वामे पूयते भुः। वदेशे पूयते राजा िवान् सव पूयते॥

मूखः mūrkhaḥ - A fool; पूयते pūjyate – is respected; वगृहे sva-gṛhe – in his own house. भुः prabhuḥ - a village head; पूयते pūjyate – is respected; वामे sva-grāme – in his own

village; राजा rājā – a king; पूयते pūjyate – is respected; वदेशे sva-deśe – in his own kingdom;

िवान् vidvān – a scholar; पूयते pūjyate – is respected; सव sarvatra – everywhere.

पुतकेषु च या िवा परहते च यनम् । समये तु पराे न सा िवा न तत् धनम् ।।

या िवा yā vidyā - The knowledge which; पुतकेषु pustakeṣu – existing in books; यत् धनम् च yat dhanam ca – the money which; परहते para-haste - is in someone else’s possession; समये तु पराे samaye tu pariprāpte – when time demands; न सा िवा na sā vidyā – neither

that learning; न तत् धनम् na tat dhanam – nor that money (would be of use).

लालयेत् प वषािण दशवषािण िशयेत्। ाे तु षोडशे वष पुं िमवदाचरेत्॥

प वषािण pañca varṣāṇi – For (the first) five years; लालयेत् lālayet – one should treat

lovingly; दशवषािण daśa-varṣāṇi – for (the next) ten years; िशयेत् śikṣayet – one has to educate; षोडशे वष ṣoḍaśe varṣe – when the sixteenth year; ाे तु prāpte tu – is attained; पुं

putraṃ - (towards) the son; िमवदाचरेत् mitravad-ācaret – one has to behave as to a friend.

  • 6. Gods give wisdom to those they wish to protect

न देवा दडमादाय रित पशुपालवत्। यं िह रितुिमछित बुया संयोजयित तम्॥

देवाः devāḥ - The gods; पशुपालवत् paśupāla-vat – like a cattle-herd; दडमादाय daṇḍam- ādāya – by holding a stick in hand; न रित na rakṣanti – do not guard and protect. यं िह yaṃ hi – Whomever; रितुम् इछित rakṣitum icchanti – wish to protect; तम् tam – that person; बुया संयोजयित buddhyā saṃyojayanti – endow (him) with intellect.

  • 7. Gods take away the wisdom of those whom they wish to punish

यमै देवाः यछित पुषाय पराभवम्। बु तयापकषित सोऽवाचीिन पयित॥

देवाः devāḥ - The gods; यमै पुषाय yasmai puruṣāya – to the person to whom; यछित prayacchanti – (desire to) give; पराभवम् parābhavam – disgrace; बु buddhiṃ - the intellect; तय tasya – of that person; अपकषित apakarṣanti – take away; सः saḥ - such person; पयित paśyati – sees; अवाचीिन avācīni – (things) topsy-turvy.

  • 8. Day-dreaming yields no fruit

उमेन िह िसयित कायािण न मनोरथैः। न िह सुय सहय िवशित मुखे मृगाः॥

कायािण kāryāṇi – Actions; उमेन िह udyamena hi – only by effort; िसयित siddhyanti –

materialize, get achieved; न मनोरथैः na mano-rathaiḥ - not by mere desires. मृगाः mṛgāḥ - Animals; न िह िवशित na hi praviśanti – do not enter; मुखे mukhe – into the mouth; सुय

सहय suptasya siṃhasya – of a sleeping lion.

गछन् िपपीिलका याित योजनानां शतायिप। अगछन् वैनतेयोऽिप पदमेकं न गछित॥

िपपीिलका pipīlikā – An ant; गछन् gacchan – keeping on the move; याित yāti – goes; योजनानां शतायिप yojanānāṃ śatānyapi – even hundreds of miles. वैनतेयोऽिप vainateyaḥ api

– Even Vainateya; अगछन् agacchan – by not moving; न गछित na gacchati – does not go;

पदम् एकं padam ekaṃ - (not even) a step.

  • 10. When man is no better than a beast

िवानाम नरय पमिधकं छगुं धनम् िवा भोगकरी यशसुखकरी िवा गुणां गुः । िवा बधुजनो िवदेशगमने िवा परा देवता िवा राजसु पूयते निह धनं िवािवहीनः पशुः ।।

नरय narasya – For a person; िवा नाम vidyā nāma – (the treasure) named knowledge; पम् अिधकं rūpam adhikaṃ - great beauty. छगुं pracchanna-guptaṃ - Secretly protected; धनम् dhanam –

  • wealth. िवा भोगकरी vidyā bhoga-karī – Knowledge gives all objects of enjoyment; यशसुखकरी yaśas-

sukha-karī – it gives fame and happiness. गुणां गुः gurūṇāṃ guruḥ - It is the teacher of all teachers. िवदेशगमने videśa-gamane – When a person is in a foreign land; बधुजनः bandhu-janaḥ - it is a relative. परा देवता parā devatā – It is the supreme goddess; राजसु पूयते rājasu pūjyate – respected among kings; निह धनं na hi dhanaṃ - not wealth indeed. िवािवहीनः vidyāvihīnaḥ - One who doesn’t have knowledge; पशुः paśuḥ - (comparable to) a beast.
