  1. 1 International Communications (MMC 3280) Spring, 2007 Assignment Group Presentations Assignment You will be required to participate in a 50-minute group presentation in which you will be presenting about media systems in different regions of the world. These presentations are intended to be a learning experience for you and the rest of the class. Time and again, we hear about how many Americans don’t know much about the rest of the world, so we are going to work together in removing this stereotype. At the end of this class, everyone of you will at least have a brief outlook about each continent. The regions to choose from are: • Eastern Europe • Western Europe • Middle East • Asia and the Pacific • Sub-Saharan Africa • Australia • North America • Latin America You will be working in groups of three, and you are free to choose which region you want. Topics are first come, first serve, so e-mail me your top three preferences as soon as possible. Content You are required to talk about three specific criteria: 1. A brief background on your region- This section includes the history, geography, politics culture of the region. 2. The media systems in your region- Choose three or four countries in the region and discuss in detail their communications systems. You should include information about the press, the broadcast system, the Internet, press laws and freedom of the press. 3. Finally, choose one interesting topic relating to the media in your country. For example: • In the Middle East, talk about Al Jazeera • In the U.S., may be talk about American Idol or the reality show phenomenon • In India, talk about Bollywood. There is a lot to choose from for this section. Make it fun and interesting, yet, educational. Talk about something we don’t know about.

  2. 2 To get all three sections done efficiently, your team must conduct some research. So the group will be required to use at least five sources for you presentations. The group will also be required to hand in a bibliography at the end of your presentation. Presentation The presentations will be 50 minutes long, and all of you are required to speak. You have to use visual aids, and you have to make it interactive: show us a video, or use other technology. You also have to make some time for discussion or for your colleagues to ask questions—I will certainly be asking questions, so be ready for me.
