How does the faithful servant behave in the Kingdom? How do we interact with less than perfect people so that we reflect our Messiah? The final sermon is about the contrast between faithful and unfaithful servants, and the consequences of our behavior.

Matthew 7:19–20 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. Matthew 7:24 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Only those who do His will are allowed to enter His Kingdom

Who is the Wise and Faithful Servant? Matthew 24:45-51 Responsible for serving others when the Master is not present. He works as if the Master is always present. Matthew 24:45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

Who is the Wise and Faithful Servant? The Foolish Servant Does not care when the Master seems not to be present. Matthew 24:48–51 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Lesson Do not think that God will delay His return, and so we don’t have to work until just before. He will come when we do not expect it, so be diligent today.

John 9:4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 2 Corinthians 6:1–2 Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Who is the Wise and Faithful Servant? Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. Matthew 25:1–4 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Matthew 25:10

Who is the Wise and Faithful Servant? The foolish servant: Thinks she knows when He will return. Does not plan beyond that moment. Instead of building on His words, they presumed to know His return and so would not plan ahead. The foolish servants built on the sand, and in the end destruction came to them.

Applications for Today Today is the day of salvation. For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2 Each and every day we should awake and act as if today is the day of our salvation. We can make a choice each day to serve Him, or serve ourselves.

Applications for Today There is a time to serve Him and repent, there is a time when it will be too late. All of these parables teach about this truth. that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. Hebrews 12:16–17

Guidance for Today Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your

  • welfare. Jeremiah 29:4–7

Guidance for Today Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no

A Famous Parable about Talents Matthew 25:14-30 Three people given ‘talents’ of varying amounts Each are commanded to use the talents for the Master’s benefit. Two are faithful, they invest, take risks, and yield an increase One is not faithful, but acts in fear. He hides it to keep it safe.

The faithful servants had identical rewards His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ Matthew 25:21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ Matthew 25:23

And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? The Good and Faithful Servant: Works for God daily, learning His will and His desires. Is ready now for His return, but plans for the future. We expect His imminent return, but plan for our grandchildren to be established in the Lord. Is diligent with the giftings and riches He has poured out on us. He owns all of us, and we need to be working for Him.

The Good and Faithful Servant: Recognizes the presence of God in the ‘least of these’ and does not look for a return from people. God is always present, even when He is “not here.” Takes Joy in daily service and worship of God. Avodah is an attitude of worship and service daily.
