Outline
- The largest platform point that I ran on last year was to
run a referendum to expand the zone (our fitness facility).
- My platform was constructed last year by the student
body after conducting nearly a thousand surveys.
- The number one complaint/concern that was voiced by
the student population was that the zone is too small and students are resorting to paying for the student life fee (which gives all students access to the zone) as well as a gym membership elsewhere which costs anywhere between $350.00-$550.00 for an 8 month cycle ( ie: Goodlife, Anytime Fitness, Fultons, LA Fitness etc.)
Background
- I believe that it is unfortunate that students are
paying for a service that they can’t utilize due to the space allowance.
- Over the past 9 months my team and I have had
dozens of meetings with Architects, Engineers, University Administrators, Students and other various stakeholders from Brock to come up with a plan and design.
- I have travelled to a number of campuses that
have had similar student run referendums.
Background
- University population has grown significantly since the Zone was
built (Population at Brock has grown by over 45% since then and at that time students only could use the zone if they paid for the membership).
- Zone capacity is frequently being exceeded. Many students
including myself go to the fitness centre as a mechanism of coping with stress and BUSU believes that it should be a students right to be able to use a resource that helps with a students’ well being.
- I happy to say that we have made a lot of progress and that upon
approval of BUSAC we will be running the referendum late March.
