Movable and immovable property

A will of movable property deals with:

  • assets such as jewellery, furniture, bank accounts, shares (including those

that relate to share transfer properties)

  • investments; and
  • digital assets.

A will of Jersey immovable property deals with:

  • freehold property in Jersey (including everything built on land)
  • leases over 9 years; and
  • the benefit of certain mortgages.

How to deal with your digital assets

Undertake a digital audit and divide them into digital assets and digital presence Digital assets

  • Digital assets will include your music, film and book collections that you have

bought and downloaded online, online bank accounts or investments, photo & video sharing accounts, domain names and intellectual property. Digital presence

  • Digital presence includes any social media accounts (Facebook etc.), email, or

personal websites which make up your online footprint.

Digital assets and how to deal with them

  • Make a list of what your digital assets are in a personal asset register and

where they can be located.

  • It is enough to leave a list of online accounts and ensure that this list is kept

up to date.

  • Make sure the list can be found, so put it with your will or with your private

papers.

  • Consider how you wish for your digital assets to be dealt with and leave

instructions in your will.

Digital presence – what should you do?

  • Review the policies of each of your providers to establish their terms and

conditions in the event of your death.

  • Review online shopping accounts.
  • Consider what your wishes are in the event of your death and understand
