Issues in linking a controlled vocabulary of MG cultural heritage terms with the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) Stella Markantonatou Istitute for Laguage ad peeh Proessig/.C. Athea Athens, Greece

  1. Issues in linking a controlled vocabulary of MG cultural heritage terms with the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) Stella Markantonatou Istitute for Laguage ad “peeh Proessig/‘.C. Athea Athens, Greece

  2. Abbreviations – AAT: Art and Architecture Thesaurus/Getty http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/aat/ – DSMG: Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek http://www.greek-language.gr/greekLang/modern_greek/ tools/ lexica/triantafyllides/ – LEX: LEXICGRAM http://www.lexigram.gr/ – MG: Modern Greek

  3. MG controlled vocabulary: • >1200 preferred terms (plus equivalent terms) denoting objects and materials • extracted from the documentation of ethnographic museums and art galleries

  4. Reasons for linking with the AAT: • The controlled vocabulary was structured into a thesaurus • Multilinguality As expected, it turned out that English and Greek encode somewhat diverging conceptualisations of the world

  5. AAT concept with a narrower scope: the case of EL ασημικά ( asimika ) ‘ ασημικά is ofte taslated as sileae – D“MG. ασηιά: A set of siler ojets; – LEX . ασηιά: Utesils or deoratie ojets ade of siler asimika : ! even silver plated ! 6. ασημικά is all these ad ee oe… AAT: • Silverwork: Visual works or portions of works fashioned in silver, especially fine, decorative work. • Silverware: Articles made of silver, especially tableware of silver used in serving and consuming food and drink. • Holloware : Containers, usually of metal, especially silver, that are hollow, such as drinking, serving, and display vessels, and that have significant depth, as distinguished from flatware and cutlery.
