Structure of this Talk

  • 1. The NESEA Conference:
  • Goals, schedule, organization and statistics.
  • 2. Visiting Suzhou:
  • Background, tourist information and tips.
  • 3. Introduction to the Keynote

The Goals of NESEA 2010 (1/3)

  • To trigger and guide research that will

make Networked Embedded Systems more usable in Enterprise Applications.

  • Networked Embedded Systems include:

wireless sensor networks, mobile devices, in-car computers and wearable computers.

slide-4
SLIDE 4

The Goals of NESEA 2010 (2/3)

  • The research community has made great strides

in recent years in providing fundamental support such as operating systems, routing algorithms and programming abstractions.

  • Key questions for the research community:

– How can we leverage these technologies to make existing business applications more efficient or realize new business models? – What is needed to bridge the gap between the requirements of large scale applications and the fundamental technologies we already have?

slide-5
SLIDE 5

The Goals of NESEA 2010 (3/3)

  • To initiate a new series of high quality,

tightly focused conferences in this area.

  • To generate discussion between

attendees and form new collaborations.

  • To provide an enjoyable as well as

educational conference experience for the attendees here in Suzhou.

SLIDE 6

The Themes of NESEA 2010 (1/2)

  • System Composition:

– We have three papers on how to compose networked embedded applications. – Move away from monolithic, per-platform application design. – Move towards more flexible, reusable and reliable methods for building networked embedded software.

  • The Tangible Cloud:

– An exciting new idea about how we should create and interact with networked embedded systems. – Extensible embedded services that are openly available on the Internet. – Use of existing Cloud resources by embedded systems.

SLIDE 7

The Themes of NESEA 2010 (2/2)

  • Secure Routing:

– Due to resource constraints, current systems don’t offer much support for secure routing. This is required by many critical applications. – We have two papers that look at we can achieve secure routing in the face of extreme resource constraints.

  • Efficient Hardware Design:

– Complementing the software sessions, we have three hardware papers, presenting new approaches for designing efficient hardware platforms. – Making embedded systems faster, smaller and cheaper is of course key to their adoption in new scenarios.

The XJTLU Student Workshop

  • This is not a part of the main conference,

but you are encouraged to attend.

  • It offers our PhD students to gain valuable

exposure to international researchers.

  • I am sure the topics will be interesting to a

number of our attendees.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Organization

  • Chairs: Dr. Kevin Lee, Prof. Christophe Huygens

and Dr. Ka Lok Man.

  • Program Committee: industrial and academic

members from 10 different countries.

  • Special thanks are also due to:

– Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University, China – Murdoch University, Australia – K.U. Leuven, Belgium

Sponsorship

  • Distributed Thought:

– A UK-based not for profit organization dedicated to supporting teaching and research in CS and EEE.

  • The IEEE:

– NESEA’10 is fully IEEE co-sponsored and subject to rigorous checking of its budget, acceptance rates and organization.

Conference Statistics

  • We had 25 papers submitted from 8

different countries.

  • We selected 10 papers for publication in
  • ur proceedings.
  • An acceptance rate of 40% overall and

35% for the main track.

SLIDE 14

The Program

  • This has been a bad year for conferences

with low submission numbers due to current funding restrictions!

  • !but I believe we have put together a

very interesting program.

  • We would like to thank all of the

presenters for their hard work on this.

Visiting Suzhou (1/3)

  • We are located in Suzhou-Singapore Industrial Park,

shown in green:

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Visiting Suzhou (2/3)

  • In Suzhou ancient district you will find some historic sites

including:

– The Humble Administrators Garden, a very famous Chinese garden and UNESCO site. – Guanqian Street, a historic Chinese shopping street where you will also find the Rumania Taoist temple.

  • A short taxi ride away you will find:

– Lake Tai, where you can watch the sun set, or ride in a traditional fishing boat. – The Leaning Pagoda of Tiger Hill, which offers great scenery and views. – Tong Li water town, an ancient and well preserved village with canals instead of streets.

Journal Special Edition

  • The journal special edition will be in the

International Journal of Design, Analysis and Tools for Integrated Circuits and Systems (IJDATICS).

  • Papers should be extended with 50% new

material.

  • Submission of extended papers is scheduled

for February 1st.

  • Further instructions will be distributed by email

within the next month.

slide-25
SLIDE 25
