Dealing with Discouragement (2:1–9)

We can get discouraged . . . 1) when we focus on sins from the past. 2) when we’re waiting for the fruit of repentance. 3) when we compare a joyful past with a painful present. 4) when we’re plowing and sowing without reaping. 5) when our work for God seems insignificant. 6) when we measure God’s work by what we can see. 7) when we feel weak, afraid, or alone. 8) when we have no vision of God’s future.

Haggai 1:15b–2:3

1:15 In the second year of Darius the king, 2:1 in the

seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: 2 “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, 3 ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?’”

6 “For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a

little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. 7 And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. 8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of

2 Kings 6:15–17: 15 When the servant of the man of God got up early and went out, he discovered an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?” 16 Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed, “LORD, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Hebrews 12:26–28

26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he

has promised, “YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE

EARTH BUT ALSO THE HEAVENS.” 27 This expression, “YET ONCE MORE,” indicates the removal of what can be shaken—

that is, created things—so that what is not shaken might remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful.
