History - Establishment � June 2006 - TEIN2 project extended to Vietnam, and was officially launched at TEIN Technical Meeting in Ha Long. � VinaREN was established as a result of TEIN2 expansion. � February 2007 - at APAN 22 Meeting, VinaREN became a primary member of APAN. � March 2008 - VinaREN was launched at nationwide scale, connecting over 50 leading research & education organizations in Vietnam � March 2009 - TEIN3 opened in Vietnam � August 2010 - APAN 30 Meeting and VinaREN 5 National Forum held in Hanoi

Objectives � Establishment and development of VinaREN, connecting to regional and international research and education networks in order to improve research quality and promote international cooperation, contributing to industrialization and modernization processes of Vietnam. � Specific objectives � Building up VinaREN’s backbone across the country, enabling the connection between major research and education networks; � Connecting VinaREN with other national and international research and education networks (NRENs) through TEIN, APAN, GLORIAD, …and global Internet; � Facilitating all necessary conditions in term of linkage, technology, content and connection costs for research/education institutions in Vietnam, connecting them to VinaREN; � Development and implementation of policies for VinaREN sustainable development; � Promoting the research and development activities based on services and application of advanced and new generation networks in Vietnam.

Activities - E-learning � Widely implemented in major universities: Hanoi National University, HUT, Can Tho Univ., Hue Univ. � E-learning project through TEIN3/APAN including: University of Tokyo, Peking University, Korea National University and Hanoi National University � Hanoi University of Technology cooperates with 11 universities in Germany, Japan, Russia, France, New Zealand, Australia, United States, Czech via VinaREN

Activities - Grid computing � Implemented by Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology � 5 projects: � Development of Grid computing infrastructure � Development of Influenza A H5N1/H1N1 alert system � Telemedicine - distance disease diagnosis � Data Grid on toxic waste affected ecological system in Vietnam � Loop calculation for the Large Hadrons Collider � 5 Grid computing nodes joined EGEE (Enabling Gridss E-sciencE)

Activities - Telemedicine � VinaREN members actively use telemedicine services: Cho Ray Hospital, Central Pediatrics Hospital, 108 Army Hospital, Viet Duc Hospital, Hanoi Medical University. � Organized telemedicine services with 12 hospitals in Japan, China, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines � November 2010 - ELSA2010 VIETNAM focuses on remote endoscopy with live demonstration from 3 major hospital in Vietnam via VinaREN.

Activities - Weather forecast � Access to and download real-time data from Hydro meteorological centers in United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, to provide precise weather forecast and typhoon alert. � Currently, 4 data sources are accessed via VinaREN: GFS forecast model from National Center for Environment Prediction (NCEP), USA; NOGAPS Model by US Navy; GEM Model by Canada Meteorological Center (CMC); and KUM Model by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) with total download of 500GB per day. � Gather data from remote sensing satellite MTSAT, AMV, …

Activities - International projects participation � Participation in International and regional projects: � AI3-SOI (WIDE project) among ASEAN+JP � Asean Virtual Institute on Science and Technology � ASTRENA Activities in Vietnam (WG, Action Plan, …) � TEIN2/TEIN3-based S&T Collaborations among ASEAN, ASEM Countries � International Collaboration on Network Application

Future directions � Develop new policy on management and utilization of VinaREN among member organizations � Strengthening advanced network research at VNNOC and VinaREN member network � Training NOC staffs to ensure smooth network operation throughout the whole system. � Promoting activities of working groups, and coordinating among VinaREN members and with international partners to deal with emerging issues such as telemedicine, climate change, e-learning and network technology reseach � Participating in joint research projects between VinaREN and TEIN3/APAN member networks
