[2] TDR MAKING A DIFFERENCE

To support effective and innovative global health research, through strengthening the research capacity of disease-affected countries, and promoting the translation of evidence into interventions that reduce the burden of infectious diseases in the most vulnerable populations. The health and well-being of people burdened by infectious diseases of poverty is improved through research and innovation.

OUR VISION OUR MISSION

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF TDR?

HOW WE IMPROVE HEALTH

  • Improving the packaging of evidence synthesis
  • Increasing interest and capacity among policy-makers and

stakeholders to use evidence

  • S

trengthening systematic processes of collating, organizing, synthesizing and disseminating research evidence

  • Integrating evidence with the tacit knowledge about what

works or does not work.

HOW IS TDR INCREASING THE USE OF EVIDENCE FOR POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION?

THE INTERVENTION

COS MIC multi-country study in Benin, Burkina Faso and the Gambia to to reduce malaria burden among pregnant women:

  • Community healthcare

workers conducted scheduled screening and treatment at home

  • Measured malaria parasites

in placenta, social and health system barriers and enablers to intervention

RESEARCH UPTAKE PROCESS

Policy panels of key stakeholders in plenary and small group discussions Met at beginning and end of proj ect, with updates in between PowerPoint presentations with data, photos and participant quotes on changes in malaria parasite levels, social acceptability, health system barriers

  • Provided local context –

the setting and the people

  • Reinforced the credibility of

the research processes

  • S

trengthened the panel members’ understanding of the research results

  • S

howed strong collaboration between the research team and community, a proven facilitator in research uptake

  • Led to strong statements of

commitments to make changes based on this study.

Y

  • u show me a video of a part icipant part icipat ing in a st udy, I'll be

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Video should be considered as another tool for research that has

policy/ practice implications.

  • Donors should ask for and fund this type of tacit knowledge sharing in

research dissemination activities.

  • New procedures on informed consent for videos, particularly with

vulnerable populations, need to be further developed.
