Recent Energy Storage Activities in SSA

Kenya Solar and Energy Storage Technologies Reverse Trade Mission

USTDA supported a reverse trade mission for representatives of Kenya’s energy sector. The visit promoted U.S. industry participation in the implementation of solar and energy storage projects across Kenya. The RTM introduced delegates to U.S. solar and energy storage technologies and services, as well as policies, regulations, and financing options that can support the implementation of Kenya’s energy storage goals.

Madagascar Solar and Battery Storage Minigrid Feasibility Study

USTDA is supporting a feasibility study for the Malagasy energy company, Henri Fraise Fils & Cie (HFFC). The study will evaluate the technical and economic viability of deploying solar photovoltaic-powered minigrids with integrated battery storage at up to 100 sites across

  • Madagascar. In partnership with U.S. battery storage

manufacturer, Fluidic, Inc. (Scottsdale, AZ), HFFC aims to install and operate a combined 9.9 MW of solar power generation and 87 MW hours of battery storage capacity.

Primus Power Energy Storage System Pilot Project

USTDA is supporting a pilot project that demonstrates the performance of an energy storage system based on the innovative technologies of the U.S. firm, Primus Power (Hayward, CA). The pilot will be located at ESKOM’s large-scale energy storage test and demonstration facility. Primus Power’s technology will demonstrate energy storage capabilities and strengthen South Africa’s electric grid by offsetting the need to use diesel and other fossil fuels for peaking

  • power. The pilot will also work to integrate renewable electricity

generation sources into South Africa’s electric grid.

Standard Microgrid Initiatives Limited Deployment of 150 Microgrid Units Feasibility Study

USTDA is supporting a feasibility study for Standard Microgrid Initiatives Limited, an African energy developer on efforts to deploy 150 microgrid and energy storage units in rural areas of Zambia. The study will demonstrate the competitiveness of U.S. solar power and storage technologies in Zambia. The project is expected to provide electricity access for over 20,000 households.
