  2. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES BEGINNING OF PRESENTATION [Good afternoon]. My name is [X], and I serve as [X] at the University of Toronto. Thank you for joining us [today]. [Today] I would like to take you through a presentation that speaks to the crucial role that U of T is honoured to play in our communities and our world. U of T is a world-leading university with three campuses in the Greater Toronto Area. We provide students with a comprehensive global education, produce life-changing research, and promote economic growth and social progress in our communities. 2

  3. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES I’m going to cover three aspects: • U of T’s Global Footprint • U of T’s Innovation and Impact • U of T’s Excellence and Leadership in Society Since its very early days, U of T has been fortunate to have forged connections with institutions around the world and to have welcomed faculty and students from elsewhere to become part of the U of T community. Today, U of T’s global footprint is signifjcant. 3

  4. SECTION 1 GLOBAL FOOTPRINT 4

  5. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES We are immensely proud of our worldwide alumni community. Nearly 600-thousand U of T alumni live, work and contribute to civil society in more than 190 countries and territories. Few universities in the world can rival the cultural diversity of our student population. For example, U of T’s fjrst-year, full-time, 2019 undergraduate class comes from high-schools all over the world – in more than 110 countries. ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR SPEAKER: First-year students: More than 14,000 students hail from nearly 1,000 municipalities around the world. On the research front, the University of Toronto’s faculty collaborate with scholars at institutions around the world. This map shows all collaborations that resulted in 25 or more publications over a three-year period – 1,740 in total. Only Harvard and University College London have a more extensive network of global collaborators. ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR SPEAKER: The lines on the map represent a set of collaborations between scholars at the University of Toronto and their colleagues at institutions around the world. Only collaborations that occurred between 2016 and 2018 that resulted in 25 or more publications are shown. (University systems are excluded; their individual constituent members are included.) U of T’s global footprint owes a lot to the city in which it’s located. Toronto is: 5

  6. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES • One of the world’s most livable cities • Considered the best economy for young people • North America’s fourth largest city • And considered the world’s most diverse city, with more than 140 languages spoken 6

  7. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES • It was also named a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts. According to PwC’s Cities of Opportunity biennial report, Toronto is third in leading global cities after only London and Singapore, making it an important hub for business, fjnance and culture. It is also home to North America’s: • third largest information and communications technology cluster • And third largest design industry 7

  8. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES According to industry watchers, it is also poised to become one of the world’s leading technology startup hubs, thanks to its attractive combination of livability and ease of doing business. With this stimulating environment to draw upon, it is no surprise that the University of Toronto is widely recognized as one of the world’s great institutions of higher learning. As you can see, respected university rankings have placed U of T consistently among the world’s top research institutions over the past several years. U of T has also ranked number one in Canada in all the major rankings. Times Higher Education World University Rankings confjrms one of U of T’s distinguishing strengths: our critical mass of top experts in a wide array of disciplines. Only 8 universities in the world demonstrate this exceptional breadth and depth. We rank among the best in the 11 fjelds for which this respected ranking compiled data. 8

  9. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES The University of Toronto is increasingly regarded as one of the world’s leading academic institutions from a reputational standpoint. A Times Higher Education (THE) survey asked respondents to evaluate academic institutions based on their esteem in research and teaching and U of T ranked 19th globally in 2019. In another important measure, U of T is consistently ranked top 5 in the world for research output… … in the company of Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and MIT. The National Taiwan University Ranking, which ranks universities according to the performance of scientifjc papers, places U of T at 4th in the world… 9

  10. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES … in the company of several prestigious universities. Thanks to this world-class environment, U of T graduates are highly employable. U of T ranks twelfth for global employability… … and eighth among public universities. 11. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES 3.7 million jobs have been created by alumni globally. And alumni-founded ventures have generated $368 billion in annual revenues. Turning to our research excellence, we’re fortunate to enjoy strengths in a number of research disciplines, some of which are closely tied to the Toronto region’s leading industry hubs. These areas include: Fintech HIDDEN SLIDE: Drawing on our strengths in ICT, U of T researchers are creating next-generation computational and data analytic methods and tools. U of T researchers are also integrating the University’s traditional strength in data security and privacy to develop defense-in-depth cyberphysical frameworks that will underpin the next generation of fjntech applications such as mobile payments, money transfers, loans, fundraising, and asset management. 11

  12. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES Cleantech and Renewable Energy HIDDEN SLIDE: U of T has a long and outstanding record of global leadership in research and innovation in fjelds related to energy, environment, climate change, sustainability, cleantech and biofuels. A great deal of this activity is being translated into patents, licenses, and start-up companies that have the potential to offer cleaner energy solutions to the world. Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology HIDDEN SLIDE: U of T is a hub for advanced materials and manufacturing research and partners with industry to test new ideas that have the potential to boost productivity, save money and reduce environmental impact. 12

  13. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES We have great strengths in the Humanities. HIDDEN SLIDE: For example, our philosophy group is ranked 13th in the world, while we rank 12th in the world for English language and literature. Children’s Health and Development HIDDEN SLIDE: Our wide-ranging expertise on the well-being of children extends from the very early days of life to studies on the development of empathy in young children to internationally recognized scholarship on bullying and cutting-edge thought leadership on educating children. 13

  14. ON-SCREEN IMAGE SPEAKER’S NOTES Legal Studies HIDDEN SLIDE: The University of Toronto’s law school has a rich tradition of graduating leading legal minds. Our Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies contributes leading scholarship on crime, order and security from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and theoretical approaches. Law at U of T is ranked 11th in the world, refmecting outstanding legal studies and exceptional scholarship in a range of research groups. Genomics HIDDEN SLIDE: U of T is conducting groundbreaking work in genomics. Research carried out by Professor Stephen Scherer’s team resulted in a “genetic formula” that can help clinicians identify genetic mutations that have the highest and lowest likelihood of causing Autism Spectrum Disorder. The University is now sequencing the whole genomes of 10,000 people each year, which will aid in our overall understanding of complex diseases and our advance of precision medicine. 14
