See if you can use a sentence like this in your essay where it is appropriate.

Context in Elaborations

  • Context can include:

○ Information about who/what states the quote ■ An expert? ■ A study? ■ A credible author? ○ Information about what’s happening in the quote ■ When is taking place? ■ Where are the events of the quote occurring?

Context in Elaborations

  • Elaboration/Explanation sentences are typically made up of three parts:

○ Context to the quote (comes before the quote) ○ Clarification of the quote (comes directly after the quote) ○ Extension of your own thinking (follows the clarification)

Additionally, football helps students learn important mental skills. For instance, sometimes a play is made and both teams quarrel over who should receive the point. Tiis situation provides a chance for kids to work out their problems on their own and create a solution using social skills. In the article, Flag Football: It’s the Girls’ Turn to Play, the author argues that football is “...great for their social skills and they resolve things on their own. It’s good for them.” Tiis highlights how football allows students to gain social skills. As players strive to resolve conflicts on their own, they learn essential skills about communication they will need for their entire lives. Another way football involves mental conditioning is the use of problem-solving.

Try to include these types of sentences where appropriate in your essays!

Introductions:

  • Comprised of three main parts:

○ hook- first sentence: grabs the reader’s attention ○ background info- informs reader on the topic ○ thesis statement- spells out your position on the topic and reasoning for the topic

  • Must be unique and original
  • Don’t just restate your research question!

Types of Hooks

Quote- “So, never worry about failure. It’s gonna happen. But that’s okay: go ahead, take chances…

and you might just find that what feels like failure isn’t failure at all; it’s what inspires you to dream even bigger.” -Kermit the Frog, 2014

Set the Scene- Imagine being submerged under four feet of water in a makeshift diving bell

for hours, all for the sake of creativity. Tiis was the only way Jim Henson was able to film Kermit’s

  • pening scene in Tie Muppet Movie.

Question- Did you know the original Kermit the Frog puppet was made from Jim Henson’s

mother’s coat?

Fact- Doctorate of Amphibious Letters, PhD. is the honorary degree bestowed upon Kermit the Frog in

1996 from Southampton College in New York, for his “contributions to environmental awareness and education.”

Simile- “Life’s like a movie. Write your own ending.” -Kermit the Frog

Background Information:

  • Tell your reader what they need to know in order to understand

your paper as a whole. ○ Assume your reader knows nothing about your topic.

Thesis- The Snickers bar is the best snack for teenagers, due to its high levels of protein, satisfying sweetness, and all-around portability.

Overall, teenagers should always choose a Snickers bar when they are hungry. The high level of protein in a Snickers Bar will keep hunger pangs under control, all the while being both great-tasting and pocket-sized. So the next time you are waiting for practice to start, in the middle of writing an essay, or dinner is an hour away, just remember, when you’re hungry, why wait? Grab a Snickers!
