  10. Why a new trade policy? Vision: a just world • without poverty, • where people are valued and treated equally, • enjoy their rights as full citizens, • can influence decisions affecting their lives. Purpose: To help create lasting solutions to the injustice of poverty, as a part of a global movement for change, empowering people to create a future that is secure, just, and free from poverty. Poverty – inequality - political choices and decisions.

  11. EU trade policy: a tool for sustainable development EU Trade strategy “Trade for all” (2015). Various positive elements: - Recognition of the importance of a value-based trade policy - A section on fair and ethical trade initiatives, including new “Fair and Ethical Trade” European City award - Measures on responsible supply chain management However, overall, sustainability in trade remains “voluntary” Page 12

  12. EU trade policy : time for a new vision - Yes to trade, but people and the planet first - Trade agreements should not undermine public policy space (in EU and in EU trading partners) to keep democratic control of : • Food policy • Jobs and labour rights • Human Rights • Climate change & environment • Public services • Fiscal Justice • Sustainable public procurement • Intellectual property Page 13

  13. EU trade policy : time for a new vision No symmetry in market access for developing countries, - especially Least Developed countries Need to change the way in which decisions about trade and - investment policies are made. No to special private justice system to resolve conflicts - between states and investor companies - Need to put in place a mandatory “due diligence” for compliance with sustainability and human rights of products sold in EU market. Textiles seems approriate sector to start. Page 14
