  2. Pick an Issue; Any Issue….. • No cure or disease modifying agent available • Over 5 million affected, but probably higher – Projected to rise 15 to 16 million over coming decades • Over 16 million family caregivers provided unpaid care valued at $18.4 billion – Mortality rates of caregiver spouses exceeding those of person with dementia • Alzheimer’s and other dementias cost nation $277 billion in 2018 with projections of $1.1 trillion by 2050 – Cost of this condition single handily on track to bankrupt Medicaid The Hoosier Dementia Dilemma ISNA Policy Conference

  3. More Fun Facts….. • Declared by CDC, NIH, and WHO as having epidemic status; we’ve only just begun • Passed cancer a few years ago as being most feared disease among Americans – This includes Americans of ALL ages; not just older adults • Those with dementia are more likely than those without dementia to have other chronic conditions – People with dementia have twice as many hospital stays and much longer average length of stay per year as other older adults • Only disease in the top 10 whose mortality rates have increased over the years; mortality rates of the other 9 diseases have decreased – Alzheimer’s disease 6 th leading cause of death; likely higher than that (as high as 3 rd ) The Hoosier Dementia Dilemma ISNA Policy Conference

  4. Indiana • Projected increase of 18.2% in number of Hoosiers age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s by 2025 • $981 million dollars in Medicaid costs in 2018 – Projected to increase 23.4% by 2025 • 19.6% readmission rate for people with dementia • 338,000 Hoosier caregivers providing unpaid care The Hoosier Dementia Dilemma ISNA Policy Conference
