Why does Vallejo Need a New School? Why Griffin Academy?

Griffin Academy was created to fulfill the following needs:

  • Overwhelming demand for MIT Academy.
  • To fulfill a promise made to the MIT community four years ago.
  • A chance to create the “school of the future.”

Griffin Academy & MIT Together – “Team Griffin”

  • The two schools will work together, with MIT providing logistical support

and Griffin Academy instructional innovation;

  • Griffin Academy dovetails perfectly into the best of MIT – technology

instruction, grad requirements, community service, Destination D.C., etc.

  • Griffin Academy can work closely together – a Summit Learning student

might take Mandarin from MIT, whereas a struggling MIT student might complete a “playlist” to make up a US History class.

Griffin Academy Timeline

  • Pilot project underway in middle-school science
  • Opening in Fall, 2018, with 140 sixth & seventh graders
  • Expanding to 6-8 for 2019-20 school year, then expanding

steadily thereafter, until it’s a complete 6-12 program (like its “big brother,” MIT)

  • Long-term location adjacent to MIT Academy (when MIT

construction complete) – temporary housing for 1 or 2 years.
