Brief History of Cannabis

  • Cannabis has been part of human evolution since the

beginning of recorded history.

  • In ancient Chinese times, cannabis was used as a medicine,

including its oils, tinctures and cannabis-based preparations.

  • Today’s presentation concerns the recent developments in

clinical research regarding the re-establishment of “Cannabis as a Medicine”.

1930’s and Cannabis’ Demise

  • Up until the late 1930’s cannabis based medications: oils, tinctures and preparations were routinely

used by American doctors and physicians worldwide. The following pictures depict some of the many types of cannabis-based medicinal products that were available.

Marihuana Tax Act of 1937

  • The unfortunate passage of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, ended the role of cannabis as a medicine in the

United States – and with the passage of the United Nations Single Convention Treaties of 1961 and 1971 – Cannabis (including hemp) became prohibited throughout much of the world.

  • Formerly a part of the US Pharmacopeia – Cannabis was sadly withdrawn as an “accepted” medicine.

Cannabis Research Continued

  • In 1937, under the direction of Harry Anslinger, Prohibition

Commissioner of the newly formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN), cannabis became a banned substance in the US. In 1938, Anslinger convened a meeting of 23 individuals, each of which had some expertise in ‘marihuana.’

  • This was a planning meeting to implement prohibition, and an

information session to learn more about the plant.

  • There were experts on psychological efgects, on hemp crops, and
  • n ‘marihuana’ chemistry.

  • Dr. Roger Adams
  • From this group came a Dr. Roger Adams, a Harvard educated, renowned organic chemist with

several published papers. Dr. Adams, from University of Illinois and group from 1940 – 1949 carried out 27 studies on cannabis, published in the American Journal of Chemistry. Dr. Adams isolated:

  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • Dr. Adams synthesized these cannabinoids.

  • In 1964, with the assistance of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam

also isolated THC then further determined its chemical composition / chemistry.

  • Thus Dr. Mechoulam is credited with the discovery and “isolation” of THC – nonetheless Dr. Roger

Adams “inferred THC’s structure” and basically got it right. Further Dr. Adams applied for a patent on CBD isolation going back to 1940 and it was awarded in 1942.

  • From the Abstract:
  • “The isolation of cannabidiol from red oil obtained from hemp is described in detail in J. A. C. S. (Journal
  • f the American Chemical Society) 62, 196 (1940). This process which includes the treatment of purifjed

red oil with 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride and the formation of cannabidiol bis-3,5-dinitrobenzoate has been found of particular value for the isolation of the desired product. Ammonolysis of the benzoate, i.

  • “It has been found that from the extracts of hemp (Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica) that a red viscous
  • il can be obtained, commonly known as red oil, from which a pure crystalline compound, cannabidiol,

can be isolated (Adams, Hunt & Clarke J.A.C.S. 62, 196 1940).

  • Through a chemical study (J.A.C.S. 62, 196, etc.) it has been shown to have the chemical formula:
  • With the exception of the position of the double bond in the left hand cycle of the above formula, the

structure of cannabidiol is well established. Investigations show this left hand cycle to be a tetrahyrdo benzene ring.” Link: https://thecannabus.fjles.wordpress.com/2011/07/2304669-isolation-of-cannabidiol-1942.pdf

  • Dr. Adams Work on Cannabis Places Him on FBI “Watch List”
  • Dr. Adams became suspect in the eyes of the FBI because he was doing studies into the chemical

mechanisms by which the plant Cannabis sativa (marijuana) afgects the brain. The plant had been efgectively banned by the passage of the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act. For the purposes of this research Adams had obtained red oil extract of the plant legally from the United States Department of the Treasury. In 1939, this was the main focus of Adams’ work. For these reasons the Offjce of Naval Intelligence said it would never approve security clearance for Adams until World War II.

  • Here it became imperative for Dr. Adams to have this high level security clearance as he was instrumental

in developing synthetic rubber for the US Military. Natural rubber supplies to the US had been cut ofg from the Far East by the Japanese during World War II. Adams continued the work of E.K. Bolton (friend from Harvard days) at DuPont and successfully completed the project.

  • Skeletal System
  • Circulatory System – the circulation of blood via arteries,

capillaries and veins

  • Nervous System
  • Lymphatic System
  • Respiratory System
  • Endocrine System – hormones

Recognized “systems” within our bodies: Now – an Electrical Circulatory System and hemp can potentially “feed” this system.

Electrical Circulatory System

  • A Dr. Bjorn Nordenstrom of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm

Sweden (where the Nobel Prizes are awarded) has postulated that there is an additional circulatory system within the human body – an Electrical Circulatory System.

  • Although we do not plug ourselves into the wall outlet at night,

we do regenerate electrical activity within our nervous system during sleep.

  • Dr. Nordenstrom’s books: Biologically Closed Electrical Systems

and his “clifg’s notes”: Biologically Closed Electrical Circuits describe the unexplored world of humans – and give strength to the healing powers of electro-therapy.

1991 Two German Scientists Win Nobel Prize

  • Did you know that two German Scientists won the Nobel Prize

in Medicine in 1991 for their research showing that nutrients enter and depart through the cell membrane in response to the electrical (not chemical) activity of these nutrients?

  • Did you know that the body often brings nutrients to areas in

need because of their electrical capabilities to initiate reactions (like enzymes do), rather than for their chemical characteristics?

  • Interestingly the electrical nature of hemp and cannabidiol may

be as signifjcant as all the potential chemical benefjts in terms

  • f human health and wellness.

CBD, Hemp and Electrical Nutrition

  • We are electro-chemical beings. Everything we eat, drink and touch

afgects us electrically.

  • Qi (or Chi) is electric energy associated with living organisms.
  • Hemp is quite electric – not only in its inspirational attributes, but actually

has been developed into an incredible energy storage technology.

  • Chemical engineer, Dr. David Mitlin and research group, have developed

a hemp battery and storage capacitor that may rival the best of science – and for signifjcantly lower cost.

  • This development may well revolutionize the way we think about energy

and its storage for generations to come.

The Body Electric

We routinely measure numerous electrical activities within the human body: We rarely think to treating the human body with the very same electrical signals that we routinely measure – however there is signifjcant evidence that electro-medicine may be one of the next frontiers in the medicine of the future. Cannabidiol from Hemp may play a signifjcant role here. An endogenous cannabinoid, known as Anandamide has shown signifjcant benefjt as a cell signaling molecule.

1980s Discovery of ECS – Dr. David Allen Reviews

  • The Endogenous Cannabinoid System,

discovered in the mid-1980s is far under- recognized for its far-reaching importance.

  • This system which regulates balance or

“homeostasis” within us regulates such functions as mood, sleep, appetite and hormone regulation.

  • Dr. David Allen has an excellent three-minute

review here.

  • The numerous functions of the ECS can be

summarized as “the body’s ability to maintain itself and function in the proper environment”

  • Dr. David Allen.

Our Endogenous Cannabinoid System

  • The ECS has receptor sites in the brain and central

nervous system (CB1 receptor) and in the viscera, internal organs and gut (CB2).

  • It is interesting to note that the CB1 neurotransmitter

receptor in the brain has more receptor sites than the receptor sites for all other neurotransmitters – COMBINED!

  • Thus, many researchers now conclude that we humans

(and all mammalian creatures, including horses, dogs, cats, fjsh) are designed to accept plant-based cannabinoids in order to supplement the functioning of this large broadly encompassing self-regulatory system.

Entourage Efgect

  • The hemp plant that we have developed contains 80 – 100

trace cannabinoids and some versions now contain a signifjcant proportion of non-psychoactive Cannabidiol (CBD).

  • There are an additional 400 + / - chemicals found in hemp

including terpenoids, fmavonoids, plant waxes, chlorophyll, etc. It stands to reason that some of these chemicals are also found in hemp seed.

  • These chemical components in hemp seed, although expressed

in relatively small quantities – all synergistically combine to produce a magnifjed “Entourage Efgect” upon human health and wellness.

Entourage Efgect Part II

The sum of 80 – 100 cannabinoids, many in trace quantities, combined with 400 other plant compounds: terpenoids, fmavonoids, plant waxes, chlorophyll, etc. – all act synergistically to produce an Entourage Efgect as described by

  • Dr. Ethan Russo.

The sum total of all these plant compounds working together produces a far greater efgect than a single or double “active ingredient” extraction – which is why the natural botanical version potentially carries greater efgect than the pharmaceutical versions.

Entourage Efgect Part III

  • All 500 chemical compounds native in cannabis act

synergistically to produce a far greater efgect than that of single or double active ingredient extraction.

Clinical EndoCannabinoid Defjciency

  • There are interesting applications today, as researchers

including Dr. Ethan Russo, a famous cannabinoid researcher, now postulate there is a Clinical Endocannabinoid Defjciency Syndrome and that conditions such as fjbromyalgia, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome and migraine headache all arise as a result of an internal cannabinoid defjciency.

  • Supplementing with plant-based cannabinoids does seem to

have a positive efgect on people’s health and wellness.

Nutrition Against Disease

  • At the 2016 European Industrial Hemp Association Conference in Wesseling, Germany we heard from a Dr. Patrick

Collins of Azabu University in Japan. Dr. Collins mentioned that dementia is a relatively new development within Japan and believes that a contributing factor is that hemp and hemp-based cannabinoids have been removed from the Japanese diet since the end of World War II. Currently there are 4 million individuals diagnosed with dementia in Japan and the total is expected to rise to 7 million in the near future.

  • Formerly a staple of the Japanese diet, the removal of hemp food products has created a defjcit in essential fatty acids

and a defjcit in plant-based cannabinoids within the Japanese population. The health of the brain, central nervous system and overall nerve function / communication depends signifjcantly on the intake of these essential nutrients. In this case, the removal of essential nutrients from the human body – we see the unfortunate long term efgects on this elderly population.

  • Prior to World War II, hemp was a signifjcant crop within Japan. There once were 85 hemp textile factories located

here and the Japanese used to supply hemp textile and other hemp products to the US markets for nearly 100 years. During World War II, the Japanese cut ofg American access to Japan-produced hemp products – which resulted in the now famous US Army’s Hemp for Victory campaign of World War II.

Neurological Benefjts - Pharma Meds Target Only The Synapse

  • Currently, no medicine exists to efgectively cure any

neurodegenerative disease, according to the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

  • In neurology, pharmaceutical medications target the

synapse, wherein the overall neurological network only 2% of all neuronal communication exists. (Source: Electro- Medical Products International).

  • CBD seems to be activating the entire neural network – well beyond just the synapse. As increasing

numbers of anecdotal success stories come in, we aim to understand the process further and then fjnd a true “mechanism of action”.

  • Natural, botanical hemp-based CBD is being studied by the UCSD Center for Regenerative Medicine for its

Neurogenesis – Part II

  • HempMeds believes that that botanical CBD can potentially increase both synaptic density as well as neuronal

density within the brain.

  • The importance of this: the hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of synaptic density.
  • Should we be able to reverse this and rebuild synaptic density in elderly patients - especially with a natural botanical

remedy that is non-pharmaceutical, no side efgects – this would be a huge step forward in neurological medicine, as well as tremendous for humanity and the future quality of life for many of our senior citizens.

  • As shown in animal studies that when synaptic density increases, so does cognition / cognitive function.
  • Our goal would be to reverse upwards of 20 years of cognitive aging…!

More re Neuro-Regeneration

  • Previous medical thinking stated that we come into the world and by the

age of three months we have a maximum number of brain cells that we carry throughout life.

  • Over time, these brain cells deteriorate and this is what causes “Aging”.
  • New Age medicine shows that we do actually produce new brain cells

and a Dr. Sandrine Thuret has an excellent Ted Talks presentation re Neurogenesis or Neuro-Regeneration.

More re Neuro-Regeneration – Part II

  • In a recent animal experiment Cannabidiol (CBD) improved neuro-regeneration in the nerve system of adult mice.
  • Interestingly enough, THC had no efgect on neuro-regeneration, only CBD activated neuro-regeneration.
  • This is in line with other recent fjndings on the pluriform / pluripotent role of the CB1 receptor.
  • Pluripotent stem cells have the ability to be programmed to become ANY cell within the human body or

  • We have seen a recent news release from Mayo Clinic researchers (June 21 2016) who had been studying neurological

trends for the past 30 years and reported their fjndings in JAMA Neurology.

  • This report cited the signifjcant increase in Parkinson’s disease and “parkinsonism” particularly in men over the age of

70 years. This is the fjrst study to suggest such a trend, according to researchers.

  • Dr. Rodolfo Savica, MD, PhD, the study lead author mentions that “we have evidence to suggest that there has been a

genuine increase in the risk of Parkinson’s disease.” The numbers: For every 10 calendar years of life:

  • Men of all ages have a 17% higher risk of developing “parkinsonism”

and

  • Men of all ages have a 24% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease

Huntington’s Disease/Other Neurological Disorders on The Rise as Well

  • The prevalence of Huntington’s disease, another neurological disorder – may need to be revised upwards as genetic

markers point to a statistically signifjcant increase among the general population.

  • Although there are numerous stories of sick people and health-challenged children receiving assistance from CBD

– we truly feel that healthy people can take a daily “maintenance regimen” and then potentially avoid some of the potential degenerative risks that are mentioned in the Mayo Clinic’s Parkinson’s article.

  • We believe that this trend exists beyond Parkinson’s and into other neurological disorders – as we are continually

challenged by our environment, our excessive usage of cell phones and other factors.

  • Please see this article for more on this alarming trend.

  • The US Government patent # 6,630,507 (previously discussed)

lists Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants.

  • Thus our national healthcare researchers believe there is a

strong place for cannabis-based medicine to efgectively treat this unfortunate Traumatic Brain Injury situation.

  • Research from UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California

involved 446 young adults who sufgered auto accidents and related traumatic brain injury.

  • Interestingly, the regular cannabis users among this

group of young adults were 80% more likely to survive, presumably because their brain cells had that extra layer of neuroprotection that medical cannabis and CBD can provide.

  • From this we conclude that young high school and college football players, potentially even the NFL football pros

would do well on a course of natural botanical hemp-based CBD therapy.

  • Since this is a botanical remedy there there is virtually no downside and the potential to protect brain cells in the

event of a traumatic head injury makes this a type of “second helmet” that is always with the young player.

  • While our pharmaceutical development partners work toward a CBD-like medication that will treat those

who have sufgered a severe concussive injury, a natural botanical product is available – that has shown neuroprotective benefjts per the ‘507’ patent.

human subjects.

  • While these exploratory studies were conducted in neurons grown in the laboratory, they might ofger insight

into the role of infmammation in Alzheimer’s disease and could provide novel therapeutics for the disorder.

  • Salk Professor David Schubert, the senior author of the study mentions: “Although other studies have ofgered

person’s ability to carry out daily tasks.

  • It afgects more than 5 million Americans according to the National Institutes of Health and is a leading cause
  • f death.
  • Alzheimer’s is also the most common cause of dementia and its incidence is expected to TRIPLE during the

next 35 – 50 years.

  • A Hollywood movie has been made about the story of Dr. Omalu and his discovery of CTE – that was at fjrst

controversial enough to have the NFL try to discredit Dr. Omalu and his work.

  • Science has prevailed in the end – although the experience of Dr. Omalu shows how diffjcult change and

“new concepts” can be for our “establishment” to digest and come to grips with.

  • Cannabis is facing similar challenges as basically we have all been lied to, according to Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
  • Dr. Gupta has “doubled down” on his stance that cannabis is good for you and certainly with the discovery of

the Endogenous Cannabinoid System and the fact that the US Government holds a patent on the therapeutic usage of cannabinoids shows that “the establishment” is having to re-think their stance on cannabis.

As a review, here is a synopsis of Alzheimer’s:

  • There are billions of nerve cells in the brain called neurons.
  • Neurons transport messages and communication

throughout the brain using electrical signals

  • On the surface of the neuron is a protein called Amyloid

Precursor Protein (aka APP)

  • Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) is pulled from the surface
  • f the neuron by enzymes
  • This frees up a protein called Beta Amyloid
  • In a healthy brain, these Beta Amyloid protein fragments are

broken down and eliminated

As a review, here is a synopsis of Alzheimer’s:

  • In brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease, these

fragments accumulate

  • These fragments then form sticky, insoluble plaques
  • These amyloid plaques accumulate outside the neuron
  • These buildups may block cell-to- cell communication at

neuronal junctions, known as synapses

  • Synapses are tiny gaps between neurons where signals

(think spark plugs), jump the gap

  • Whether beta amyloid plaques cause Alzheimer’s disease

remains controversial

  • Protein fragments are broken down and/or eliminated via the body’s lymphatic system
  • The lymphatic system breaks protein down into individual amino acid components
  • These amino acids can be re-combined by the body’s cells to form new proteins
  • In the brain, we have a separate lymphatic system known as the Glymphatic system

  • The Glymphatic system is a waste clearance system
  • It promotes the elimination of soluble proteins and metabolites from

the brain

  • It promotes similar elimination of protein and metabolites from the

Central Nervous System

  • Besides elimination, the Glymphatic system facilitates distribution of

  • This includes distribution of glucose, lipids, amino acids, growth

factors and neuro-modulators
