Where we started… • The Christie is conscious that our employees are the future to maintaining our reputation as a centre of excellence • The Human Resource Team organised the Health and Wellbeing Day where representatives from all of the Trust’s activities held interactive events for the staff to enjoy • Complementary therapies which are already available to staff • Onsite smoking cessation and • Physical activity groups 4 th March 2011 - the spring board to launching our Health and Wellbeing strategy The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

  6. They said… • As part of the day staff were asked how The Christie could help them improve their health and wellbeing. Staff suggestions included • Weekly weigh in • Healthy eating advice • Health check • Raised awareness of what will help achieve a healthy lifestyle The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

We listened… • The Christie established • Spring Shape Up • A 10 week programme based on British Heart Foundation advice run by Occupational Health • Open to staff with a BMI above 27 • The programme includes information, exchange of ideas and periodic ‘know your numbers’ check to help individuals develop a healthier lifestyle • Fruity Friday • Nutrition and portion size awareness • Quarterly MOT days • Open to all staff this is an opportunity to have cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and diabetes tests performed The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

We plan... • We have planned a number of events over the next year each supporting a national awareness campaign from depression awareness to love parks • Our aim is to demonstrate that getting fit and healthy does not have to break the bank • Our hospital is our community and our community is a great society in which to nurture, develop and grow that is why we are one of the best places to implement ‘The Public Health Responsibility Deal’ The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

Quarter 3 Health and Stress busters Stress awareness – exercise and healthy eating can July– Sept Wellbeing Fruitilicious (July) help to beat stress Cycle back to happiness • Fruit basket to each ward and department with flyers (September) and leaflet drops regarding stress and the help available including EAP • Cycleathon from lands end to john o’groats equivalent volunteers to cycle as much or as little to achieve the distance • Advertise our new intranet page and advertise the events in Chinwag National Health Love Parks Week Encourage people to be more active outdoors Campaigns July Generic Communication -Intranet Sun Safety Month Generic Communication -Intranet Quarter 3 Economic Wellbeing 24 steps to Christmas Oct – Dec Physical Wellbeing • Inter ward/department challenge which takes the most steps in a day cumulatively (try to get pedometers from a sponsor) • Advent calendar on the intranet staying healthy in the winter – diet and indoor exercise advice • Alcohol awareness National Health Bullying Awareness Week Promotion of Policy Campaigns Generic Communication -Intranet Global hand washing day Generic Communication -Intranet October Alcohol Awareness Promotion of Policy Generic Communication -Intranet The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

We identified... • By working closely with our Occupational Health Provider we have identified and consistently monitored the areas which have caused the highest attendance incidence rates • The two main areas affecting our directorates are psychological and non-work related musculoskeletal issues each averaging 42% of all management referrals received by Occupational Health The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

  12. We have… • An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which specialises in staff counselling • Reduced cost complementary therapies onsite • The ability to adjust duties and implement a phased return to work to assist individuals to either stay in or return to work • Actively taken part in the NICE round 2 ‘Depression Detection and Management of Staff on Long Term Sickness Absence’ The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

  13. We recruited… • A Trust catering dietician to look at patient and staff menus • We will be seeking feedback from staff and patients regarding catering The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

  14. We have... • A wellbeing strategy to underpin the work we are doing around wellbeing • This work will feed into the Health and Safety committee and be monitored on a quarterly basis The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

Communication is success… • We have improved communication with staff: • increased promotion including feedback boxes • use of staff display stands • the intranet • team brief • staff magazine – Chinwag • posters and flyers distributed across all wards and in the dining room • We have informed staff of the results of the national staff survey and conducted a follow up exercise • Feedback has been improved around organisational change The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

  16. Recent planned programmes… • Review and relaunch of stress management policy • Recent tender for EAP services to a more specialised provider experienced in staff counselling provision • Increased promotion activity around smoking cessation The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

  17. Commitment... • Signed up to DoH Public Health responsibility deal – one of the first trusts to do this • Core commitments • Supporting pledges specific to The Christie The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
