CoE ESTABLISHMENT
- Decline appetite to conduct research.
- Post 1990, a major restructuring of the mining
industry.
- Mining companies moved focus to their core
business as result economic challenges, reduced R&D Budgets
- COMRO was transferred into the CSIR during this
period of restructuring.
- Creation of Mining-tek then Centre of Mining
Innovation (CMI).
- Creation of small research consultancies
- Loss of expertise through emigration and
retirement.
9
- Facilitate the elimination of exposure to high occupational health and safety risk to mine
employees and communities affected by mining activities by
- Conducting high impact research that is widely adopted and relevant,
- high quality health and safety testing and monitoring facilities are available nationally
- Improve the utilisation and sustainability of MHSC seed-funded national research assets and
facilities
- Create the potential for job opportunities through local content and local manufacturing (DTI and
Technology Innovation Agency), Commercialisation Activities
- Promote the CoE within the mining industry as a Knowledge hub for OHS
- Contribute to training and up-skilling of mineworkers on OHS matters (Mechanisation, Technology
Innovation and change in the mining industry)
