What is the ‘Active Resilience Alternative Provision’?

A provision offering part time educational sessions which focus upon improving mental health, physical health and wellbeing.

Using a non clinical therapeutic approach our provision empowers pupils to stabilise emotionally, enabling them to positively engage in the other placements they hold in education or social care settings. The service includes a subscription to an online portal which empowers pupils to improve, monitor and track their mental and physical health achieving overall wellbeing.

Wh What t is is The AR R Portal?

An online service which measures mental health and wellbeing and suggests strategies (based around the 5 ways to wellbeing) which help children and young people monitor, track and maintain their mental health and overall wellbeing.

Ho How did did we e Select elect our ur Conten ent?

  • In line with recommendations from the centre for

wellbeing at the New Economics Foundation the portal promotes strategies around the 5 ways to wellbeing which improve mental health.

  • The teaching of emotional intelligence (EI) which is

advocated by The World Economic Forum has been incorporated into the portal.

  • EI is vital for mental health and is a greater predictor of

success in almost every field of work than either prior work experience or standard IQ score, we value the importance of developing this in pupils

  • As mental health is a continuum pupils are supported to

track and monitor their personal mental and physical health

  • journey. They will develop individually through engaging in

strategies recommended through the portal. Pupils are supported in joining community groups and socialising. In turn pupils are healthier both mentally and physically, they are more resilient and they acquire positive attitudes.

Ofsted Inspect ction Framework 2019

Positive attitudes, resilience, mental health and its relationship with physical health.

Ofsted will focus upon how well…

  • The curriculum …supports learners to develop their character –

including their resilience, confidence and independence – and help them know how to keep physically and mentally healthy

Ofsted will assess how well schools are developing pupils …

  • Confidence, resilience and knowledge so that they can keep themselves

mentally healthy

  • Understanding of how to keep physically healthy, eat healthily and

maintain an active lifestyle, including giving ample opportunities for pupils to be active during the school day and through extra-curricular activities

  • Willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social

settings, including by volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively

What do Pupils have Acce ccess to?

  • Each pupil is provided with a personal account on our portal,

enabling their mental health and wellbeing to be monitored, using our assessment scale (this can be likened to a Fitbit for the mind)

  • With a basic level of EI we can all take a more proactive approach

to our mental health, happiness and wellbeing. The pupils upskill in this area via the portal.

  • Reports are provided to each pupils registered placement which

display the distance travelled in relation to mental health, as a result of engaging with any of our recommended strategies.

  • The wellbeing activities our mentors provide are based around

the 5 ways to wellbeing (adopted by MIND the mental health charity and by the NHS). With us pupils engage in a range of strategies which relate to being active, connecting with others, learning new skills, giving back to others and being mindful.

What do Pupils have Acce ccess to?

  • Essentially pupils are empowered to monitor and evaluate both

their mental and physical health journey. They will develop individually through engaging with our mentors and acting upon the advice accessed through the portal.

  • We provide an incentive scheme which facilitates engagement in

a range of activities, and they are supported in joining community groups and socialising. In turn pupils are healthier both mentally and physically, they are more resilient, and they acquire positive attitudes.

Th The Power of Physical Activity

  • Physical activity positively affects mental health and

even reduces the symptoms of anxiety and mild/moderate depression. Therefore, this is promoted as a dominant coping mechanism for the maintenance of mental health.

  • A BMI tracker is installed in the portal allowing pupils to

also measure the positive effects on physical health of engaging in recommended activities. This also links to education around nutrition as well as mood and food.

  • A mental health scale is used to measure against, and

pupils are advised of strategies they can use in order to achieve both mental and physical health.

We work closely with stakeholders to ensure that there is a shared vision for education for each pupil Sending a pupils to our Active Resilience Alternative Provision means that you are able to justify an intervention you have in place which meets the needs of your pupils in the following areas - Mental health improvements , mental health literacy, emotional intelligence, physical activity engagement and overall wellbeing. Improvements in these areas are linked with increased self- efficacy, improved attitudes and behaviours, increase in readiness to learn and improvement in school attendance.

Criteria to be Rated Outstanding by Ofsted (Inspections Framework 2019)

  • The way the school goes about developing pupils’ character

is exemplary and is worthy of being shared with others.

  • They are highly motivated and persistent in the face of
  • difficulties. Pupils make a highly positive, tangible contribution

to the life of the school and/or the wider community. Pupils actively support the well-being of other pupils.

  • Pupils behave consistently well, demonstrating high levels of

self-control and consistently positive attitudes to their

  • education. If pupils struggle with this, the school takes

intelligent, fair and highly effective action to support them to succeed in their education.

  • The school consistently promotes the extensive personal

development of pupils. The school goes beyond the expected, so that pupils have access to a wide, rich set of experiences.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Criteria to be Rated Good by Ofsted (Inspections Framework 2019)

  • The school provides high-quality pastoral support. Pupils

know how to eat healthily, maintain an active lifestyle and keep physically and mentally healthy. They have an age- appropriate understanding of healthy relationships

  • Pupils’ attitudes to their education are positive. They are

committed to their learning, know how to study effectively and do so, are resilient to setbacks and take pride in their achievements

  • The curriculum and the school’s effective wider work

support pupils to be confident, resilient and independent, and to develop strength of character.

Ofsted will judge schools on how well they cater for the ‘personal development’ of pupils and their ‘behaviour and attitudes’ will also be an area of focus. We have a range of strategies at Active Resilience AP to achieve outcomes in these areas. The HEADSSUP collaboration empowers schools to meet Ofsted requirements. The AR Portal has been designed to meet inspection criteria. The portal empowers schools to support children in meeting outcomes by creating a wellbeing profile for each pupil and it provides evidence that progress has been made in such areas.

Within the portal, pupils can:

  • Complete a mental health / mental

resilience scale questionnaire

  • Calculate their Body Mass Index

(BMI)

  • Record their recent behaviour

against the 5 ways to wellbeing

  • For each of the 5 ways to wellbeing,

set goals to improve their lifestyle

  • Along side their mentor, plan

wellbeing days which improve mental health, physical activity engagement, and overall wellbeing

Pu Pupil Score Card

The AR Portal provides evidence for stakeholders of improvements in the areas of mental and physical health as a result of engaging with the recommended strategies. A score card can be saved and printed at desired intervals to provide evidence of the distance travelled as a result of this intervention.
