  1. Success Born of Failure Comple3ng The T184 Endurance Race At The Second A?empt

  2. Jerry Hunter • 54 Years Old • Running Ultra’s for last 3 Years • Annual Mileage about 2500 • 2013 - Brutal Enduro 12 Borden, Grim Reaper 70 Mile Ultra • 2014 – T60 DNF, Grim Reaper 100 Mile Ultra, T184 DNF, Maravan Double Marathon • 2015 training up to 45 miles distance, average about 55miles/week • 2015 – T60, GUCR, Grim Reaper 70 Mile Ultra, T184, Maravan Double Marathon (DNF day 1, completed Day 2)

  3. T184 2014 What Went Well ? • Good selec3on of equipment • Prepara3on running with full pack weight (11.5Kg) • Prac3se using equipment

  4. T184 2014 DNF (100 miles) What went wrong ? • Probably did too much too close to the event (Grim Reaper 100 miles) • Started too fast, carried away by the event • Failed to take in adequate nutri3on early on • Had set too “hard and fixed” 3me objec3ve at 100 mile mark • Not fully mentally prepared for the challenge • Fell vic3m to “The Graveyard” at Streatley

  5. 2015 Prepara3on • More effec3ve and considered tapering (Last big run 70 miles 5 weeks before) • Conscious working on keeping pace down • Improved selec3on of food and ensuring food easily to hand, started ea3ng early on • A more flexible plan for 3me targets, rest and recovery • Understanding the size of the challenge, both physical and mental

  6. Key Equipment WAA Ultra Bag • 4 x 750 ml water bo?les one with drinking tube • Mountain Equipment Bivvy Bag • Compression shorts, 3ghts, T shirt and sleeves • (OMM Rotor top) • OMM Kamleika Waterproof smock / (trousers) • (Garmin Etrex) • Esbit Cooker and pot with improvised wind shield • “Pound shop” spectacles – 2 pairs used...... • (Walking poles) • Phone • (Power Monkey) • HOKA shoes and Injinji toe socks, spare socks • Basic watch / HRM • LED Lenser and Coleman head torches • First aid/foot care • ( ) = Items not consumed / used during event

  7. Nutri3on Total Calories carried 10280 Weight 2.577 kg Total Calories consumed = 8116 Unconsumed weight 0.683 Kg Throughout the race I felt well hydrated and did not feel excessively hungry or low in energy.

  8. Nutri3on Breakdown Extreme Adventure Meals 2 Extreme Adventure Ultrafuel 3 (1) Adventure Foods Breakfast Muesli 2 Mini Salamis 6 Miscellaneous gels (some with caffeine) 11 (6) Shot Blocks (Caffeine) 1 Snicker Bars 6 Salted Peanuts (100g) 1 Chocolate Pancakes 8 (2) Tailwind 10 (3) SOS Rehydrate 2 (2) Instant Coffee Sachet 1 (1) ( ) = Items not consumed during event

  9. Learnings From 2015 Success • Foot care is paramount • Take a decent set of torches • It WILL be mentally tough at 3mes • Naviga3on is challenging in the dark if 3red. Do not assume if you have previously run a sec3on in the light, it will look the same in the dark and vice versa. • The la?er sec3ons will inevitably be slower than you expect / hope (Final stage pace approx 25 min/mile) • Don’t worry about the hallucina3ons !

  10. Foot Care ! • Toe Socks (Injinji) • Spare Socks • Gurney Goo • Vaseline • Selec3on of plasters and tape • Stop and inspect / treat BEFORE you are forced to

  11. Genng From A to B • Set yourself overall and intermediate targets • Prepare to be flexible with plans • Share some 3me with others, but maintain your own comfortable pace • Take 3me to navigate • Eat. Hydrate. Care for your feet. • Accept moral support – it is there for you from your fellow runners (and share some if you can) • Be realis3c about 3me scales in la?er part of race • ENJOY

  12. GOOD LUCK !
