  2. 2 The Structures Academic Team Stephen Hallett Alberto Pirrera Professor in Composite Structures Senior Lecturer in Composite Structures Janice Barton Professor in Experimental Mechanics Ben Woods Lecturer in Aerospace Structures Our research into the Giuliano Allegri mechanical performance of Reader in Composite Structures composites encompasses novel Mark Schenk numerical methods, novel structural Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering configurations, advanced analysis Luiz Kawashita techniques, multi-functionality and Lecturer in Composite Mechanics data rich experimentation. Michael Wisnom Prof essor of Aerospace Structures Matt O’Donnell Lecturer in Composite Structures Terence Macquart Paul Weaver Lecturer in Aeroelastics Professor of Lightweight Structures

  3. 3 Some of our Awards • Chris Hunt , Francescogiuseppe Morabito and Yian Zhao won the first SAMPE UK Composites Design and Make Competition, using WrapToR truss technology • Chris Hunt , also won First Place in the 34th SAMPE Students Seminar, at the SAMPE Europe conference in Nantes, France. • Michael Wisnom awarded the prestigious 2019 Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials from U. Delaware Center for Composite Materials, in recognition of his “significant contributions through leadership and scholarly endeavours to the international field of composite materials” • The Composites University Technology Centre (UTC) was recognised at Rolls-Royce’s annual UTC Directors' Conference, for its significant contribution to the company's patent target. • Rainer Groh was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Trust prize in recognition of his outstanding work and exceptional future prospects.

  4. 4 Composites UTC • Going from strength to strength • Giuliano Allegri appointed as Deputy Director • 8 RAs, 13 PhD students, 6 EngD research engineers • Two major ATI/Innovate UK projects started this year • FAN Testing And STatistical Integrity CALibration (FANTASTICAL) - £1.7M • FAN Design And iNtegrity, GO (FANDANGO) £0.9M • Two case studies written up on the success of past Rolls-Royce supported CDT students

  5. 5 Wind Blade Research Hub • Wind Energy sector, in the last few years, has attracted funding in excess of £1.3m. • Projects range across length scales • From polymer chemistry for leading edge protection all the way up to design and elastic tailoring of >100m blades. • 15 UoB researchers and academics • Close four-way network comprising the UoB, ORE Catapult, Vestas and the NCC.

  6. 6 Other new activity • CerTest Certification for Design: Reshaping the Testing Pyramid • Multi-scale modelling to account for defects and features in full scale structures • Hybrid testing with data rich full-field characterisation • SIMprocs • Process modelling and mechanical performance models linked for the first time × 50 magnification

  7. 7 Summary and Outlook • 40 PhD students and 30 Staff Researchers • World-class research and activities, ranging from blue-sky to engineering applications • See quick-fire and posters for more technical details • Are delivering innovative solutions and technology for our industrial partners • Further opportunities for new projects and technology transfer
