Middle School Matters

“Middle school is the time where students should begin to ‘take the reins’ on communicating with adults about their questions and concerns, advocating for their rights and their needs, and letting their peers and the adults around them know what they need in order to be successful, happy, and safe.”

  • Jessica Lahey, teacher and author of The Gift of Failure

Homework 101

Learning to use a planner effectively builds a strong foundation for planning and prioritizing. Planners are always the first line of defense; however, learning to effectively use a planner takes time. As a result, your child’s homework is posted on PowerSchool Learning (PSL) We strongly encourage parents to sit with their children and go through their PowerSchool Learning accounts together Advisors will keep you informed regarding homework completion.

Self Advocacy

Getting in the habit of advocating for themselves early will serve students well as they move into high school and college. Help your child build self-advocacy skills:

  • Don’t be afraid to let your children monitor their own work and grades
  • Encourage your child to take advantage of tutorial periods, Writing and

Learning Center appointments, and after-school study halls

  • Encourage your child to email teachers and copy you
