  3. Narrator : Christmas is a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child. He is the reason for the season! Our musicians will lead us all in singing traditional Christmas carols as the story is retold. You have copies of the songs in the pews. Narrator : It all started with a girl named Mary who was engaged to a man named Joseph. One day when Mary was praying, the Angel Gabriel - a messenger sent by God, appeared before her in a glow of radiant light, and said: Angel : “ Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee. ” Narrator : Mary was deeply troubled by his words and worried about what his greeting meant. But the Angel went on to say: Angel : “ Do not be afraid. You have found favor with God. You shall conceive and bear a son and give Him the name Jesus. Great will be his dignity and he will be called Son of the Most High. ” 3

  4. Narrator : Mary wondered how this could happen since she was not married. But the Angel told her that nothing is impossible with God and the power of the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her, and the child to be born to her would be called the Son of God. Mary replied: Mary : “ I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to Your Word. ” Narrator : And so, it came to pass that Caesar Augustus published a decree ordering the census of the whole world. Everyone went to register, each to his own town. And so, Joseph went to the town of Bethlehem to register with Mary. Song : O Little Town of Bethlehem 4

  5. Narrator : When they reached Bethlehem after a long and tiring journey, they began to look for a place to stay. Joseph knocked on many doors but there was no room in any inns. Finally, as night fell. Joseph knocked on one more door. Joseph to Innkeeper : “ Do you have any rooms? ” 5

  6. Narrator : and the innkeeper replied: Innkeeper : “ No. But we have a stable where you can sleep. ” Narrator : Here in the midst of the silent night, in the stable, the time arrived for Mary’s child to be born. She gave birth to a son, and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger. Song : Away in a Manger 6

  7. Narrator : In the countryside close by were shepherds who lived in the fields and took turns watching their flocks by night. Suddenly, the Angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were afraid. But the Angel said: 7

  8. Angel : “ Fear not. For behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be shared by all people. For today in the city of David is born your Savior - who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you: You will find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. ” Narrator : And suddenly, there appeared with the Angel a multitude of heavenly hosts praising God and singing: Song : Joy to the World 8

  9. Narrator : And the shepherds said to one another: Shepherd : “ Let us go into Bethlehem and see this thing which the Lord has made known to us. ” Song : Angels We Have Heard on High 9

  10. Narrator : And the shepherds found Mary and Joseph and the baby in the stable just as the Angel had said. Song : Silent Night 10

  11. Narrator : And in the East, some wise men saw a star, and thought it would lead them to a king because of the ancient belief that signs in the heavens – stars - led to great things to come, like heralding the birth of a King. So, they went looking and said: 11

  12. Wise Man : “ Where is the newborn King of the Jews? We saw His star when it came up in the East and we have come to worship him. ” Song : We Three Kings 12

  13. Narrator : The wise men followed the star until it stopped over the place where the child was. All was calm, all was bright! When they saw the child with Mary, His mother, they knelt down and worshipped him. They bought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to Him. Song : O Come All Ye Faithful Verses 1 and 3 13

  14. Narrator : Whatever its form, the star reminds us of God, who caused the light to shine out of darkness and of the light which is the life of humanity. It is the star that pointed to the "great and heavenly light from Bethlehem's manger shining bright." The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. This is the message of the star, which points to 14

  15. Jesus, who said, "I am the bright and Morning Star." It is the star of promise, the star of fulfillment, and the star of hope. Have a blessed Christmas and join in our final song!! Song : Follow The Star 15
