REPORT FROM LAST WEEK The 30th Birthday of the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook There were 10 representing our club at this function held at their usual meeting place, Springfield House at Dural. In all there were about 100 present including District Governor Bruce Lakin and representatives of their sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Beecroft. The evening was chaired by Ross Ballinger with President Rosemary Clarke conducting the formalities. Rosemary paid tribute to our club, thanking us for turning up in such numbers, and confess- ing that our club was responsible for her being in Rotary. (Her husband, Rob, was a member of

  • ur club from 1983 to 1989.) There was also a large contingent of past members of their club in

attendance. Naturally, there was a concentration on the history of the club, its projects over the years, and the fundraising efforts during the past 30 years. Much of this was illustrated with a power- point presentation. The photo below shows the cake which was cut by DG Bruce assisted by President Rose-

  • mary. All in all, it was a happy celebration for a club which still has around 40 members and is

very active. They also displayed a very attractive banner featuring Pride of Workmanship. Reporter: David Firth

Can you help with this year’s Red Shield Appeal? We are looking for drivers on Sunday May 28th from 8am until noon. Or perhaps you can volunteer on Satur- day or Sunday next and the following weekend to col- lect at a stationary point for about 2 hours? Speak to Theo Glockemann or President Pam if you can help in any way.

Fellows, recently we became aware that one of our number, indeed our Immediate Past President, Ian Chappel, had made a decision to avoid marshalling at the City2Surf this year by entering the event himself. He was also seeking to raise $800 for Australian Rotary Health. We now fjnd that this is no spur of the moment decision—he is serious as the picture and captjon below will atuest. He has a page on the City2Surf website—read his story below. Out training today, 5km in 45 minutes, gettjng fjtuer each run. Thank you for all those donatjng, it is appreciated and it is a good cause medical research funds administered by Australian Rotary Health. 12th May, 2017

M Y S T O R Y I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I'm inspired by the work of Australian Rotary Health and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in The 2017 Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac. Five years ago I was diagnosed with leukaemia. After being taken care of by an exceptional medical spe- cialist my mission was to regain health better than before the illness. A very dear friend who was also re- covering from a major medical trauma and myself decided to trek the Great North Walk, not over several weeks but over 18 months. This was hard work in the beginning, first we managed a 5 km walk (Berowra to Berowra Waters) then an 8 km walk, then a 12 km walk. Finally walking 27 km in a day was undertaken with confidence irrespective of the terrain. With all the lead-in paths we walked about 340 km before reaching Queens Wharf Newcastle. The track starts at the Obelisk at Circular Quay (next to the anchor from HMS Sirius) in Sydney and is 240 km in length. As my lymphocytes levels improved I vowed I would raise money for medical charities (motor neuron and the cancer council). This year I have chosen Australia Rotary Health as this organisation funds medical research in Australia covering many major medical conditions. While it was taboo to mention mental health, Australian Rotary Health after more than a decade of funding traditional medical research decided that mental health re- quired its attention.
