THE STORY

Background on the Coalition:

 In 2016 seventeen Pastor’s met with G.L. Hodge and I to learn that there was a huge gap connecting the faith community with health and wellness services city-wide. They agreed to identify one representative from each congregation to learn and inform their congregations how to close the gap.  The Faith-Based Liaisons Team is a health and wellness collaborative of presently 22 local churches in San

  • Francisco. They are primarily African American

congregations committed to advocating for the needs of the underserved African-American community in the Bayview, District 10 community and city-wide.

What we learned through building this Collaborative that we didn’t know before about our community’s health?

 The Median Income in S.F. is $81,000 whereas the median income for African Americans is $29,000.  We have very little food resources for our communities  Families in our own congregations are hungry and facing multiple challenges “in silence” to live each day.  Faith based Liaisons have trusted relationships with congregants and can assist them with other health issues  Each faith community is facing similar health issues within their congregations in isolation.  FAITH + RELATIONSHIPS = HOPE

Next Steps

 Continue to fill the gaps around hunger  Pastors aligning to impact health & wellness in a collective method  Liaisons seeking training on how to interface better between community and the public sector  Secure funding that will continue to support this effort
