Per Julie:
“We tried to visit a local zoo on May 22 and I was denied entry! The park actually has a policy forbidding Segway use.” “When I talked to my fifth person, I got her to state that "someone" deemed the paths unsafe for other motor powered mobility devices. That's the language of the policy.”
Segway PTs are two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transporters powered by gyroscopes to maintain balance produced by Segway Inc., launched in 2001

Dear Ms. Conlin, “Thank you for your email regarding the restrictions to your Segway here at the Detroit Zoo. I sincerely apologize for your inconvenience as well as that of your family as you attempted to visit last week. I am especially sorry that you were embarrassed; please know that is never acceptable. We sincerely appreciate your thorough email and giving us the opportunity to review our policies. We are very committed to creating a welcoming environment for a diverse audience and do regularly review our policies. It is very important and not always easy to balance the safety
We will analyze the various factors (like terrain, pathway widths, slope, etc.) on our campus and evaluate how other similarly situated organizations have handled the usage of this equipment so that we are able to institute best practices on this matter.”
