Italy has not always been united as it is today; it was divided in small kingdoms which fought one with the

On M arch 17, 1861 Vittorio Emanuele II proclamed the birth of Italian Kingdom (Regno d’Italia) and himself as its king. On June 2nd, 1946 in a popular referendum Italian people decided to turn Italy from a Monarchy into a Republic. A day after this referendum the king of Italy Umberto II di Savoia was exiled. The president of the Italian Republic is elected for seven years and he represents the national unity. At the moment he is Sergio M attarella.
