The Residential Curriculum within Housing and Residence Life an intentional approach to programming and student engagement designed to promote experiences which help students to develop the necessary skills to allow them to become successful in and out of the classroom.

  3. How Did the Residential Curriculum Come About? In 2014 the department was challenged to consider a curricular approach to student engagement and education in the residence halls. For decades, UNCP and universities throughout the country relied upon antiquated programming models to guide student engagement and residential education. Cont.

Learning Outcomes Through participation in residential curriculum programming and activities, residents will learn valuable information and develop skills that will help them become successful students, citizens and professionals. The residential curriculum has four (4) focus areas: 1.) Academic Progress & Achievement 2.) Civility & Citizenship (2017-2018 Focus Area) 3.) Intrapersonal Development 4.) Interpersonal Development

Learning Outcome : Academic Progress & Achievement Through participation in Academic Progress & Achievement programming/activities in the Residential Curriculum, residents will be able to: • Improve basic skills needed to demonstrate academic success • Identify & utilize various campus academic resources • Increase student’s knowledge of academic integrity

Learning Outcome: Civility & Citizenship Through participation in Civility & Citizenship programming/activities in the Residential Curriculum, residents will be able to: • Develop skills to engage in positive behavior & respect towards others in their community • Engage in opportunities to learn & provide service to others in the university or surrounding communities • Develop an understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of individuals different from one’s self

Learning Outcome: Intrapersonal Development Through participation in Intrapersonal Development programming/activities in the Residential Curriculum, residents will be able to: • Develop self-respect, ethics, and integrity • Improve overall health & wellness and learn to live a purposeful life • Obtain greater knowledge and skills related to career development

Learning Outcome: Interpersonal Development Through participation in Interpersonal Development programming/activities in the Residential Curriculum, residents will be able to: • Develop meaningful relationships & effective communication skills • Develop effective leadership & teamwork skills • Improve critical thinking & problem solving skills to help in decision making

Implementation of the Residential Curriculum Each residential community (Community Directors/Resident Advisors) develops their own community-specific Residential Curriculum programming designed to meet the needs of their student population in accordance with the 2017-18 requirements outlined by the department.

  13. How does the Residence Life Staff implement the Residential Curriculum in their community? The following strategies will be utilized in implementing the residential curriculum. • Living and Learning programming • Brave Talks • Bulletin Boards • Hall council & Residence Hall Association programs • Floor and hall meetings • Social norming campaigns • Roommate and conflict management • Structured mediation and disciplinary conferences • Community service projects

  14. How do we determine if we have met the learning outcome for each of the 4 areas of the Residential Curriculum? To measure the achievement of the learning outcomes within the curriculum, the following assessment methods will be implemented. • Quarterly focus groups • Semester surveys • Direct observation • Resident Feedback
