Public sector leadership of environmentally sound procurement of data centers The call Specific Challenge: Stimulate market transformation towards more sustainable energy products, buildings and services. The Energy Efficiency Directive

  1. Public sector leadership of environmentally sound procurement of data centers

  2. The call • Specific Challenge: Stimulate market transformation towards more sustainable energy products, buildings and services. • The Energy Efficiency Directive requires that central governments purchase only products, services and buildings with high energy- efficiency performance. • Overcome operational barriers related to sustainable energy public spending such as the lack of knowledge, practical training and tailored guidelines; the lack of willingness to change procurement habits; or perceived legal uncertainties. • Type of action: Coordination and Support

  3. Vision Statement The project aims to provide public sector organisations with quantifiable information on the environmental impact of data centers and related procurement choices. Data Center EURECA: “EU Resource Efficiency Coordination Action”

  4. Goal and Objectives • The goal is to demonstrate the value of energy saving and environmental data centre best practices & policies, triggering related procurement actions • Provide public Sector organisations with a tailored solution for ‘green’ data center procurement: • Identifying where money and energy can be saved • Assisting with the deployment of self-improvement strategies • Assisting with the navigation of new technology markets with benchmarking tools & resources • Facilitating awareness, learning and knowledge sharing activities

  5. Public Sector DC Environment • “Data centres” and “Computer/Server rooms” provide the core digital infrastructure and connectivity foundation for all users of domestic, corporate and Public Sector digital services. • Data centres are enablers of energy saving initiatives and e-services • But data centers are large energy consumers and can easily waste a great deal, if not constantly reviewed and carefully monitored • EU2020 targets demand energy efficiency and increased share of “green” energy, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. • A lack of awareness of reliable metrics, key performance indicators (KPIs) and best practices • Reduced budgets to work with – looking for fast ROI and Opex savings • Barriers to change – cultural, complexity and ownership

  6. Just arrived or on the horizon • CENELEC & ETSI Standards & KPI’s • ISO/IEC Standards & KPI’s • ISO/IEC data centre “maturity model” • EU Code 2015 – is now 155 Best Practices • FP7 “Cluster” of 8 projects (DC4Cities, DOLFIN, GENIC, RenewIT, GreenDataNet, GEYSER, All4Green and CoolEmAll) to define common metrics, methodologies & terminology.

  7. The concept

  8. How you can help • To collectively take the lead on the legislation debate – bring forward solutions • To increase the profile of data centre industry innovations, expertise and solutions • By providing constructive comment and feedback • Encouraging your public sector contacts to get involved and to support energy efficiency best practices

  9. What we need • We are looking for public sector partners to work with us to help prove the concept • Looking for public sector “champions” in this field • To drive knowledge sharing and networking • Help define the training requirements for EURECA tool • Public Sector organisations can join the DCA FREE to participate click HERE http://www.data-central.org/?page=DCAMemberPubSec
