Wood Smoke in the Bay Area

 Wood smoke is the major source of air

pollution in the Bay Area in the wintertime ~ 1.4 million fireplaces and wood stoves

 Wood burning generates fine particulate

matter (PM 2.5) and carcinogenic substances that make the air harmful to breathe

 Local and regional air quality concerns

SLIDE 4

Winter Spare the Air Alerts

 Designates when there is unhealthy air in

the Bay Area

 November – February

 When a Winter Spare the Air Alert is

issued, it is illegal to burn wood unless you are “exempt” from the Rule

 Check for a Winter Spare the Air Alert:

 1-877-4NO-BURN  www.sparetheair.org  www.baaqmd.gov

slide-5
SLIDE 5

 Limit emissions of particulate matter

(PM) and visible emissions from wood burning devices

 Reduce local and regional fine

particulate emissions

Current Rule Curtailment Period

  • A curtailment period initiates a Winter Spare the Air

Alert

  • When a negative impact upon public health is

anticipated, resulting from PM2.5 levels forecast to exceed 35µg/m3

  • An alert is issued one day prior to a forecast

exceedance of the federal health standard Proposed Change:

  • “Curtailment Period” to “Mandatory Burn Ban”
  • Declare a Winter Spare the Air Alert 2-3 days sooner

to prevent an exceedance of the federal health standard

  • 4 to 5 more Winter Spare the Air Alerts estimated
