‘Keeping it in Kin Kin’ Project - keeping Kin Kin’s soils in place and by doing so improving agricultural productivity, waterway health and water quality within the Noosa Catchment.
Phase 1 – ‘Setting the Groundwork’ comprised 4 specific activities.
3
- Activity 1 – LIDAR Change Analysis & Area Prioritisation
- Activity 2 – Riparian Restoration On-ground Demonstration Project
- Activity 3 – Cats Claw Creeper Vine Survey and Action Plan Development
- Activity 4 – Engagement Activities
Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation - $67,466 Thomas Foundation - $6,000 (inclusive of review) NICA - $3,500 NPA - $3,500 TOTAL PROJECT COST - $191,181 (GST excl)
Activity 1 - LIDAR Change Analysis & Area Prioritisation
Activity overview – to ID areas within the catchment that are impacted by soil loss and deposition, including hill slopes and creek lines. This is undertaken by LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) which uses a near-infrared laser to map the land from
- aircraft. The project will compare imagery from 2008 to 2015 to
identify active erosion and deposition areas. A prioritization exercise will then inform the problem sites in greatest need of remediation in the Catchment. Update – Draft Results Received, peer reviewed, Final Draft Report Produced April 17. Other study ‘Noosa Waterways Assessment’ (Council Funded) completed and moving to the ‘Action Plan / Prioritisation’ stage to be completed March 18.

>Active channel & gully erosion >Slumping on hillslopes cleared areas >Slumping on hillslopes under weeds etc >Riparian/ Creek bank erosion

Interim Results: Soil Mobilisation in Kin Kin Catchment 2008-2015
2,486,691 tonnes of soil mobilised
Over an area of 208 ha (Total observed range dataset - 50cm- 9m erosion depth)

Activity 2 – Riparian Restoration On-ground Demonstration Works
Activity overview – On-ground demonstration site for remediation of active hill-slope and riparian
- erosion. Glasby’s property – Kin Kin.
Over 850m of stock exclusion fencing and 2300 trees (1/2 ha) will be planted as part of this project. Update – Completed – in maintenance phase.

11 months on in drought conditions…. Awesome!
Activity 3 – Cats Claw CreeperVine (CanopyWeed) Treatment, Survey and Action Plan Development
Activity overview – Cats Claw Creeper Vine manual and chemical control in current know areas, while surveys of remaining areas of the catchment will be undertaken. An Action Plan developed in partnership with SEQC, NC and NDLG so that future funding for vine eradication is strategic and targeted. Activity Update – 484ha over ~80 lineal (windy & rugged) kilometers of creekline vegetation surveyed supplemented by HL&W Funding >350 infestation sites recorded >92 sites (all those below Wahpunga Park treated) + 5 other larger isolates currently being treated Biocontrol released on several larger infestation sites Vine Management Strategy Completed

Phase 2 and includes 3 separate components:
- 1. Project Extension Officer to work with landholders, partners and
investors to implement priority remediation actions on the ground and coordinate community engagement activities.
- 2. On-ground Projects that protect and rehabilitate vulnerable soil
structures, notably devolved grants for priority landholder projects developed in Phase 1 and implementing the Cats Claw Creeper Vine Strategic Plan.
- 3. Water Quality Event Monitoring System Trial devised in
partnership with Healthy Land and Water. Submitted a Smart Farming Partnership Bid in Dec 17 to complement - $643,044
