  2. Use of MIMSAFE SYSTEMS • Where? • When? • Why? • How?

  3. Where? • Course Designers choice

  4. When? • Increased risk of short duration rotation

  5. Why • The timing aspect • The mindset aspect • The chance to react aspect

  6. Rotation - Demolition Rotation Demolition Jumping curve is upwards at first hit Jumping curve is downwards at first hit Horse is close to fence Horse jumps of too early One major hit create the rotation Demolition can go over in rotation Rider follows the horse Rider separates from the horse Time between hit on the fence and ground contact is short Time between hit and ground contact is often longer Rotation is straight forward If a rotation it is in any direction More likely to give serious rider injuries More likely to give serious horse injuries

  7. Mindset Behavioral Science of the Rider • Calculated Risk or Opportunity? • Only way to win is forward Behavioral Science of the Horse • Energy Conservative (Calculated Risk) • Survival Instinct

  8. Townend fall at Lexington ”Fast rotation”

  9. Chanse to react • No chance of improvement from rider • Normal athlete reaction time is 0.5-0.8 sec • Fence Contact Phase important to prevent fast rotation • Contact forces needs to be lowered to decrease rotational speed

  10. How • Lower contact forces • Shorter contact time • Optimized force direction

  11. Principal rotational fall The horse is traveling forwards and upwards while approaching the fence.

  12. Coming in too low the legs get trapped in front of the pole. CoG At this point the horse impacts the fence and all major forces acting on the horse have the opposite direction as the speed of the horse. The speed of the impacting legs quickly slows down and stops.

  13. The horse keeps moving forward. CoG As the ligaments stretches the forward speed translates into a rotational speed. The rotation itself takes time to develop and the forces acting on the horse will be considerably lower when the rotation is visible.

  14. CoG By this time the rotation has Force developed and the rotational speed acting on will only increase with gravity. If the horse original speed of the horse was not extremely slow the increase will only be a fraction of the total rotational speed. There is no return as the horse will continue its rotation until it hits the ground.

  15. At this point the horse starts bending its neck to the side to protect its head and neck.

  16. The horse hits the ground.

  17. Gravity at 300m/min Time (Hundreds of a second)

  18. Principal recoverable fall The horse is traveling forwards and upwards while approaching the fence. Hinge

  19. At this point the horse impacts the fence and all major forces acting on the horse have the opposite direction as the speed of the horse. The speed of the impacting legs quickly slows down. Hinge

  20. Rotational Speed The fence is driven forwards together with the impacting horse. As the fence rotates around a hinge its speed forward shifts into a speed towards the ground. As the legs are never completely trapped the rotational speed is Hinge reduced compared to a non breakable fence.

  21. The horse will have a good chance to recover from the would-be dangerous rotational fall. The total rotation of the horse will only be a fraction compared to a non breakable fence. Hinge

  22. Demolition fall The horse has not interpreted the obstacle in a correct way and ends up landing down into the fence. There is a relatively long period where both horse and rider feels the mistake. This makes the rider less reluctant to stay on the horse when it loses its balance. The risk of having a fast rotation where the rider gets trapped underneath the horse is less than when the rotation starts while traveling upwards approaching the fence.

  23. Energy at 300m/min At the low speed 300m/m or 5m/s the energy is equal to a center of • gravity fall down to the top of the fence of 1,25m. The fall of a horse into a fence like that is almost impossible, the actual center of gravity fall distance before reaching the top of the fence is much less than 1,25m and could be accounted to demolition falls. If the center of gravity fall distance from the top of the jump curve is • 0,25m before reaching the fence the fall energy level is 20% of the forward traveling speed energy. Thus using a vertical energy to take away the total energy to prevent a • rotational fall is to sub optimize the use of frangible fences. Statistics show that often there is no fall energy at al before hitting the • fence. The jump curve is still moving upwards. A recommendation is to use the, in most cases, more than five times • higher horizontal energy to activate the frangible fence. (Notes from Anders Flogård, MIM Construction)

  25. MIM Post&Rail-kit ”Generation 2” Function Function is limited to horizontal • release. Solid from vertical force, • Using MIM Clip with indicator • ”gives correct judging” and no risk of unexpected release.

  26. MIM Post&Rail kit ”Generation 3” (stabilizing offset) Function Function is limited to horizontal • release. Totally solid from vertical force • Using MIM Clip with indicator • ”gives correct judging” and no risk of unexpected release. Allow the ”horse to slide over” • without release that results in 21 penalty points. Usefull for: Fence into water • Coffin (first element) •

  27. MIM Table-kit ”Generation 3” (stabilizing offset) Function Function is limited to horizontal • release. Totally solid from vertical force • Using MIM Clip with indicator • ”gives correct judging” and no risk of unexpected release. Allow the ”horse to bank”without • release that results in 21 penalty points.

  28. MIM Wall-kit ”Generation 3” (stabilizing offset) Function Function is limited to horizontal • release. Totally solid from vertical force • Using MIM Clip with indicator • ”gives correct judging” and no risk of unexpected release. Allow the ”horse to slide over” • without release that results in 21 penalty points. Usefull for: Fence into water • Coffin (first element) • Trippel brush (third brush) • Gate • Wall •

  29. ”Generation 3” (stabilizing offset) Negative Offset Post WALL 125mm or 5”
