Civolution VOD Watermarking

• NexGuard-PayTV watermarking technology also used in post-production

and digital cinemas

• Watermarks imperceptible to consumers
• Watermark payload embedded either locally by STBs or prior to delivery

by VOD servers

– Includes Operator ID (Satellite/Cable provider, ISP), User ID (consumer ID), and Date/Time

• Millions of devices already deployed and ready to be activated with

software push

Civolution VOD Recovery Process

• 1. ID the Operator
• Studio downloads pirate content and uses Civolution’s Packer to

‘compress’ file for testing

– Packer completely spoils video making it unwatchable (removes color, resolution, etc.) but retains payload – Reduces testing sample size to ~15-20MB

• Studio uploads sample to Civolution detection portal
• Automated detection returns Ticket #, Operator ID, and Date/Time

• 2. ID the Consumer
• Studio (or CP vendor) sends Ticket # to Operator
• Operator references Ticket # to Civolution detection portal
• Automated detection returns User ID to Operator

Premium VOD Capture Methods

Video

• Good: Camcord using HD camcorder & tripod
• Good: Screen video capture when viewing on PC
• Best: Digital HDMI video output using HDCP stripper

Civolution:

• Watermark payload will survive any video capture

– Tested with various recording and processing scenarios

• Higher quality = Higher chance of recovery

Audio

• Good: Analog capture from TV or PC viewing
• Best: Digital capture from optical output

Civolution:

• Audio not scheduled to be watermarked by studios (although

available)

Video

• Obfuscate consumer ID

– Remove or mask video watermarks?

– Civ: Not possible due to watermarks applied to every video frame and watermark survival rate

– Increase in cable/signal theft? – Game console firmware hacks?

• New source of HQ English audio?

Other unknown threats?
