In today's lesson we will be looking at different ways we can use semicolons in our writing. How do we currently know how to use a semicolon in our writing? Semicolon in a descriptive list! When Stanley stepped off the bus, all he could see was: two large oaks trees with a brown hammock strung between them; acres of vast, barren desert and a solitary wooden building in the distance.

A semicolon can be used to replace a conjunction to connect two main clauses which are closely related to each other. Example: The yellow-spotted lizard is particularly dangerous; if you get bitten by one you will die A main clause makes sense

Remember to change the capital letter to a lower case letter.

Mix and match activity. On the accompanying worksheet, you have been given a variety of main clauses which can be linked together using a semicolon. Write your matching pairs into a book linking with semicolons.

Firstly, write two main clauses where the ideas link and join them together using and or because. Secondly, underneath you need to rewrite your sentence using a semicolon.
