2018 and was attended by Heads of State, Government, and TerritoriesSecond level

  • The 49th PIF Forum is very much tied to the notions of

inclusiveness and equality”

SUMMARY OF KEY OUTCOMES FROM THE 49TH FORUM

On Climate change

  • Forum Leaders endorsed the Boe Declaration on regional security. The

Declaration highlights climate change as the greatest threat to the security, livelihood, and wellbeing of Pacific people

  • Forum Leaders were very clear about the importance of immediate urgent action to

combat climate change.

  • Requested the U.N Secretary General to appoint a special adviser on climate

change and security, and a special rapporteur to review global, regional, and national security threats caused by climate change.

  • Forum recommitted to the Framework for Resilient Development in the Pacific and

endorsed the Pacific Resilience Facility to further strengthen the region’s resilience

On Fisheries and Ocean Resources

  • Fisheries is an important driver for economic growth and inequality reduction.
  • The Communique highlights the importance of the long term sustainability and

viability of the region’s fisheries resources.

  • Further, the leaders agreed to secure the geography of our Blue Pacific

highlighting the importance of the regions ocean resources for development and growth. On Regional Security

  • Boe Declaration emphasises an expanded concept of security that includes human

security, humanitarian assistance, environmental security.

SUMMARY OF KEY OUTCOMES FROM THE 49TH FORUM

On Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)

  • represent the leading cause of premature deaths in the Pacific region.
  • Pacific Leaders have committed to leading a whole-of-government and whole-of-

society approach to address the issues of childhood obesity, early childhood development and related NCDs. On Partnerships

  • Pacific Leaders wanted to strengthen regional security cooperation, supported by

partnerships to enhance capability and enable greater dialogue, analysis and information sharing.

DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS ASSISTANCE FOR NAURU DEVELOPMENT ACHIEVEMENT

Partners to coordinate efforts towards supporting Nauru to achieving their SDGs Help improve the national statistical system, particularly for statistics collection and analysis in environment and climate change data

  • Other data gaps such as social statistics such as gender and human rights for

example

  • Many departments and agencies do not have a robust statistical system in place
  • Longer term technical assistance to help train staff/improve system
