In the late 1800s, Sigmund Freud became interested in mental illness. From his work with the mental ill, he concluded that each individual’s personality is made up of three parts: the id’ the ego, and the superego. The id consists of biological urges. The ego is the thoughtful, decisions-making part and
- thirst. The superego is the part of the
personality that right or wrong. Freud believed that people often push unpleasant or frightening thoughts into their
- unconscious. These unconscious thoughts
influence the individual's personality. To Freud’s way of thinking, adult personality are shaped mainly by early childhood experiences and conflicts. People’s personalities changes as they grow and are exposed to new ideas, attitudes, and behaviors. Still, some basic personality traits stay the same throughout a person’s life. Psychologists have tried to explain how and why the human develops. There were three theories of personality proposed by Sigmund Freud, Erik Erikson, and Abraham Maslow.
According to Erikson, people continue to develop socially and psychologically up until their death. Erik Erikson, devised an eight-stage theory of personality development.
Abraham Maslow theorized that everyone has a basic drive to a vibe his or her fullest
- potential. Maslow used the term
self-actualization to describe the process by which each person strive to be all that he or she can be. Maslow found out that few people ever reach their full potential. He developed a theory to explain why. He considers that before people achieve self-actualization, their their basic needs had to be met. Maslow created a hierarchy of needs:
