Introduction

Background of the Study

  • Teachers are always in the search of better teaching and

learning techniques to keep students engaged and motivated in class.

  • One emerging technology is the use of online homework

whereby students may be given unlimited chances of working on a set of problems that vary in their every attempt for self-practice.

  • These are presented in a set-up perceived as more

engaging and appropriate to today’s type of learners.

  • This study explored the perception of Integral Calculus

students on taking online homework particularly on the topic integration techniques.

Introduction

Homework

It has been a constant practice in math and other subjects to provide extra activities, or homework to students with the goal

  • f reinforcing what have been learned in class.
  • These activities are done beyond class hours and usually

accomplished at home where students can work independently or with groups of classmates using available and related resources.

  • In math, these home works typically come in the form of

paper-and-pen exercises consisting of problems that were not solved in class

Introduction

Online Homework and Schoolbook

  • As emphasis on homework type is mentioned, this research

considered a different type of assessment, referred to as Online Homework, one that is implemented by means of the internet.

  • The use of internet in an educational setting has become

more prevalent, since learners nowadays are technology-savvy and use the internet whether their teachers incorporate it in their classes or not. Learning Management System

  • A learning management system (LMS) is a software

application used to carry out e-learning courses.

  • It is an internet-based means to deliver content with

interactive features allowing teachers and students to conduct classes, assessments and correspondence virtually.

Introduction

Schoolbook

  • Many educational settings employ the use of learning

management systems as an extension of the physical

  • campus. One of which is the Schoolbook.
  • The most notable features of the Schoolbook are that it

allows teachers to upload lessons, tutorial videos and

  • nline assessments.
  • It also has a grade book that reflects grades of students on

activities for immediate monitoring.

  • There are features for chatting, managing the portfolio of

student works and gives analytics on the performance and usage of students individually or as a class.

Introduction

Motivation and Performance

  • Students attitudes including their motivation play a role
  • n how they involve themselves in the learning process.
  • Pintrich and Schunk defined motivation as the manner

whereby a goal-directed activity is instigated and sustained (as cited in Tuan,et.al, 2005). They mentioned that students will only actively engage in learning tasks once they perceive its value and meaning.

  • Motivation was categorized according to six factors

namely: self-efficacy, active learning strategies, science learning value, performance goal, achievement goal and learning environment stimulation.

  • A 30-year meta-analysis done by Fan, et. al (2016) gave a

synthesis on the homework-achievement in math and science and they found that there is a small yet positive correlation between homework and student achievement in math.

Introduction

Motivation and Performance

  • Rosario, et.al (2015) in their multi-level modeling study on

homework design highlighted the role of teachers in designing the activity and that extension homework gave a positive impact on the students achievement in math.

  • Sarmiento (2017) examined the perceptions of online

homework in mathematics of accounting and finance using MyOpenMath to administer online home works. Results indicated that the students had a greatly positive perception of online homework and that they became more confident in answering homework.
