─ 3 teams comprised of one intern (or subintern), one resident and two medical students ─ Round with general pediatric hospitalists and pediatric subspecialists

  • Wide variety of patients (newborn-adult,

generalist and subspecialist care, range of complexity of diagnosis)

Baystate Medical Center

  • Inpatient pediatric and adolescent units

─ 4 teams comprised of one intern, one resident and one medical student (1 from UMass, 3 from Tufts) ─ One hospitalist rounds with two teams

  • Wide variety of patients (newborn-adult,

generalist and subspecialist care, range of complexity of diagnosis)

Milford Regional Medical Center

  • No pediatric residents
  • 24/7 hospitalist coverage- students work directly with

hospitalists

  • Small pediatric inpatient unit for mostly

straightforward admissions

  • Round in newborn nursery and attend

deliveries/assist in resuscitation

  • ED consults
  • Student take their weekend call at University to allow

exposure to subspecialty patients

Call

  • No overnight call at any site
  • 3 calls during inpatient – 2 weekdays, 1

weekend

  • Students stay until 10pm and then return the

following day at 8am

  • Only work weekends if they are on call

Medical students are assigned to work with 1 intern/1 senior resident. They are directly involved in pt care, admissions, rounding, calling consults, etc. Very close interaction with attendings. Large variety of patient conditions – both generalist and subspecialist care. Typical Day  Time it starts 6:45 am  Time it finishes (when not on-call) 6:00 pm  Are Call Rooms available – no overnight call, done by 10:00 pm when on call. Team  Structure of Team – each team has 1 senior resident and 1intern  How many patients assigned to each student – on average 3  To whom does student report – either to intern or their senior resident Patients  Patient population served – age newborn – 17 yrs. Diverse Worcester population, many with English as a Second Language or who need interpreter services. Varied pt populations in ambulatory setting as well. Time  How is time divided (how much Ward time, E.R. time, Clinic time) – 2.5 weeks inpatient, 2.5 weeks ambulatory in pediatrician’s office, Pedi ER approximately 9 hours, 2 mornings newborn nursery Evaluation  Who evaluates the student – Inpatient: senior residents/intern teams; hospitalist attendings); Ambulatory: Preceptor in the office Logistics  Location – inpatient floor is 5th floor, 5E at UMass.  Meals – not included  Parking – UMass fees apply
