PARENTS REACHING OUT GRANTS – BACKGROUND

  • Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grants support enhanced

parent engagement at the local, regional and provincial levels with particular focus on parents who face barriers to parent engagement.

  • PRO Projects are varied and include:

– Outreach to parents from diverse backgrounds – Projects that support parents in isolated communities – Resources for parents of students with special education needs – Workshops to help parents be engaged in their children’s success at school – Translation of materials into languages of the school community

WHO CAN APPLY FOR A

REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL PRO GRANT?

It is important that the applicants involve parents in the planning of the project.

The following may apply:

  • Non-profit organizations operating in Ontario
  • Parent groups operating in Ontario
  • Publicly funded school boards operating in Ontario
  • Post-secondary institutions in Ontario

Note: Priority will be given to parent-led projects in partnership with school boards

TYPES OF ELIGIBLE REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL PROJECTS

  • Parents as Partners – professional learning for staff and

parents on the benefits of and strategies for involving parents

  • Creating a Welcoming School Board and School

Environment for Parents – translation of materials, workshops for board and school staff, etc.

  • Skill-Building Opportunities for Parents – workshops,

leadership development, etc.

  • Enhancing Communication between School and Parents

– develop and/or expand outreach strategy to parents

EVALUATION CRITERIA (Regional/Provincial Grants)

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria and the availability of funds:

  • The level parent involvement in the development and implementation of the

project

  • The project involves parents and the community and supports student success
  • The project is led by parents or carried out in partnership with a parent

group/school board

  • The project will enhance parent engagement in support of improved student

achievement and well-being.

  • The project has the potential to reach a large number of parents
  • The project will promote parent leadership and build capacity that is ongoing and

can be sustained by parents

  • The project will promote collaboration between parents, schools and community
  • rganizations
  • The project will meet a demonstrated need to support parent engagement
  • The application includes a detailed description of what will be done, and how and

when the project's goals and objectives will be met

  • A plan is in place for evaluating the project and its results/success indicators
  • The project can be adapted to other regions

EVALUATION CRITERIA (Regional/Provincial Grants)

Special consideration will be given to eligible projects that:

  • have not been previously funded under the PRO

Grants program

  • promote increased access and awareness of

math strategies and resources for parents to support their children's learning at home and at school

  • partner with a school board.

INELIGIBLE PROJECTS, COSTS OR ACTIVITIES

  • Activities that have taken place
  • Payment to staff (e.g., co-ordinators, consultants, administrative staff)
  • Student focused activities, including speaker fees for student audiences and purchase of

supplies for home use

  • Purchase of goods & services that the Ministry of Education already pays for (e.g.,

instructional materials for students)

  • Purchase of items for parents not directly related to the workshop, seminar etc.
  • Ongoing operational costs (e.g., leasing of offices, long-term administrative costs and

financial commitments, maintenance of website or utilities, including internet)

  • Honoraria for parents
  • Capital costs (e.g., equipment)
  • Portable/handheld devices such as tablets or laptops
  • Out-of-province travel (e.g., speaker travelling from outside Ontario)
  • Debts or financial losses that result from a project
  • Cost of police background check
  • Speaker fees or honouraria exceeding 40% of total approved funding
  • Refreshment costs exceeding 15%, promotion costs exceeding 5% of approved

funding

BUDGET

  • Provide details related to all costs, including:
  • Speaker (up to 40% of total approved funding)
  • Copying
  • Translation
  • Childcare
  • Refreshments (up to 15% of total approved funding)
  • Promotion Costs (e.g., advertising) (up to 5% of total approved

funding)

APPROVAL OF THE PROPOSAL

  • Applicants funded for proposals will be asked to sign a

contract before receiving the funding

  • Proof of liability insurance must be submitted before

funding is released

  • Funding will be paid in two installments:

1) An initial payment after the contract is signed 2) A final payment after the final report is completed and submitted Deadline for final reports is August 31, 2016
