"The individual's belief about himself or herself, including the person's attributes and who and what the self is.” To be aware of oneself is to have a concept of oneself. Roy Baumeister, Social Psychologist, Florida State University

Self-Concept

  • Self-image: The view you

have of yourself

  • Self-esteem: How much

value you place on yourself

  • Ideal-self: What you wish

you were really like

Three key elements

slide-4
SLIDE 4

High Self-Esteem Low Self-Esteem

  • Confidence in our own

abilities

  • Self-acceptance
  • Not worrying about what
  • thers think
  • Optimism
  • Lack of confidence
  • Want to be/look like

someone else

  • Always worrying what
  • thers might think
  • Pessimism

The extent to which we like, accept or approve of ourselves, or how much we value ourselves. Self-esteem always involves a degree of evaluation.

Self-Esteem

Poor Self-image = limited self-awareness; students really don’t know who

they are

Unclear Ideal Self = manipulated view of ideal self or “who they should be”

as defined by their perception of other students, media promoted stereotypes, and how they are defined by summative assessments like tests, grades and praise

Poor Self-esteem – based on lack of information and misinformation

about themselves, they are vulnerable to outside manipulation. This is compounded if they lack self-regulation, and therefore are vulnerable to stress, anxiety and depression

Low Self-Esteem

In today’s rush, we all think too much—seek too much—want too much—and forget about the joy of just being.
