Soap Cycling is all about kids. The soap we distribute in developing countries such as the Philippines, Cambodia, China, and Malaysia is mostly directed toward WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) programs that focus on improving the health of children under 5—those who are most vulnerable to diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and diarrheal diseases. In developing Asia, these three diseases account for 1/3 of all under-5 deaths.

Caring Creativity Community

Cultivate understanding for those less fortunate and how the next generation can help those in need. Give free reign to your child’s sense of wonder and fun—all while learning about science, the environment, and developing world issues. Let your child use soap—a common, everyday item—to raise awareness of the issues facing Hong Kong and the planet.

Work rkshop Details

Summary

A fun and meaningful event for kids and parents. While parents work scraping and sanitizing used soap for shipment to underprivileged communities, their children can learn about the importance of hygiene and sustainability. Kids will join in the action, helping to sort soap by color and shape. Next they will use powdered soap, food coloring, and their own imagination to create soap art (which they can take home for a souvenir). Finally, each child will receive a personalized certificate recognizing their participation. Check out the fun on this video with one of our corporate partners from this past fall semester.

Sustainability/Hygiene Briefing

Prior to the workshop starting, a Soap Cycling representative will provide a brief speech giving background on our organization, talk about what we will accomplish during the workshop, and focus on 3 main messages:

  • The importance of proper hygiene with

questions to the young participants about the most important times to wash hands.

  • Sustainability as an issue and how they

can adjust their lifestyles to live greener.

  • The science of soap and how it works.

Where it comes from, what it does, and why it is so important to keep kids healthy.

Note: can be given in Cantonese, English, or Mandarin

Soap Sorting

A Fun and Easy Way to Give Back

Kids will go through our stockpile of used soap to sort by color, shape, and size. Helping us to separate soap this way will improve our efficiency while also confronting our small friends with the wastefulness of modern life.

Break

During a quick break to catch our breath, the young ones can take this opportunity to prime their creative spirits. We encourage them to write messages encouraging the downstream soap recipients

Soap Art Making

Indulge Your Creative Side

Using soap powder, food coloring, and warm water, participants will get a chance to bring their imagination to life. The end result: a unique creation that you can take home as a souvenir.

What a are the Parents D Doing?

Kids can also take part in soap scraping if the parents feel that they are old enough to handle the putty knife. We also have some metal spoons available for safer scraping. While the kids are taking part in their activities, parents will volunteer cleaning soap by scraping off any detritus. If kids are quite young, parents can also assist them.
