Consequences of the Protestant Rebellion

What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead…You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On the principle of works? No, but on the principle of

And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,

47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48for he has regarded the low estate of his

he has done great things for me.

50He shows mercy from generation to

Paraphrastic (The Message)

And Mary said, I'm bursting with God- news;

47I'm dancing the song of my Savior God. 48God took one good look at me, and look

what happened - I'm the most fortunate woman on earth! What God has done for me will never be forgotten, 49the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others.

50His mercy flows in wave after wave on

those who are in awe before him. 51He bared his arm and showed his strength, scattered the bluffing braggarts.

Early World

It not infrequently happens that something about the earth, about the sky, about other elements of this world, about the motion and rotation or even the magnitude and distances of the stars, about definite eclipses of the sun and moon, about the passage of years and seasons, about the nature of animals, of fruits, of stones, and of other such things, may be known with the greatest certainty by reasoning or by experience, even by one who is not a Christian. It is too disgraceful and ruinous, though, and greatly to be avoided, that he [the non-Christian] should hear a Christian speaking so idiotically on these matters, and as if in accord with Christian writings, that he might say that he could scarcely keep from laughing when he saw how totally in error they are. In view of this and in keeping it in mind constantly while dealing with the book of Genesis, I have, insofar as I was able, explained in detail and set forth for consideration the meanings of obscure passages, taking care not to affirm rashly some one meaning to the prejudice of another and perhaps better explanation.

  • St. Augustine, “The Literal Interpretation of Genesis” 1:19–20

AD 408

41

slide-38
SLIDE 38

Early World

With the scriptures it is a matter of treating about the faith. For that reason, as I have noted repeatedly, if anyone, not understanding the mode of divine eloquence, should find something about these matters [about the physical universe] in our books, or hear of the same from those books, of such a kind that it seems to be at variance with the perceptions of his own rational faculties, let him believe that these other things are in no way necessary to the admonitions or accounts or predictions of the

  • scriptures. In short, it must be said that our authors knew the truth about the nature
  • f the skies, but it was not the intention of the Spirit of God, who spoke through

them, to teach men anything that would not be of use to them for their salvation.

  • St. Augustine, “The Literal Interpretation of Genesis” Chapter 2, Verse 9.

42

slide-39
SLIDE 39

Early World

But simultaneously with time the world was made, if in the world's creation change and motion were created, as seems evident from the

  • rder of the first six or seven days. For in these days the morning and

evening are counted, until, on the sixth day, all things which God then made were finished, and on the seventh the rest of God was mysteriously and sublimely signalized. What kind of days these were it is extremely difficult, or perhaps impossible for us to conceive, and how much more to say!

slide-50
SLIDE 50

Egypt & Exodus

  • 1. In liturgical celebrations, in songs and prayers,

the name of God in the form of the tetragrammaton is neither to be used or pronounced.

  • 2. For the translation of Biblical text in modern

languages, destined for the liturgical usage of the Church, what is already prescribed by n. 41 of the Liturgical Instruction “Liturgiam Authenticam” is to be followed; that is, the divine tetragrammaton is to be rendered by the equivalent of Adonai/Kyrios: “Lord”, “Signore”, Seigneur”, “Herr”, “Señor”, etc.

  • 3. In translating, in the liturgical context, texts in

which are present, one after the other, either the Hebrew term Adonai or the tetragrammaton YHWH, Adonai is to be translated “Lord” and the form “God” is to be used for the tetragrammaton YHWH, similar to what happens in the Greek translation of the Septuagint and in the Latin translation of the Vulgate.

The Spotless Bride of Christ

  • 105. Then the Priest, with hands extended, says:

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop* and all the clergy. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will.

He joins his hands.

Who live and reign for ever and ever.

Final Words

Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide when get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love with Him and it will change everything. Fall out of love with Him, and it will change everything.
