2017 Overlee Swim Season

  • We want the Overlee Swim Team and School of Fish

experience to be a fun, exciting and positive experience for the kids

  • Encourage good sportsmanship, team spirit, and respect

for officials, coaches and teammates

  • Successful senior dinner was held on February 22
  • Focus was on leadership, inclusiveness and building a

cohesive team

  • Seniors lead spirit activities throughout the season
  • Discussed that drinking and drug use will not be tolerated
  • Positive feedback and ideas from seniors

Practice Policy

  • Practice schedule is the same as last year
  • Swimmers must attend 2 practices per week to be considered for

Saturday Meets, Relay Carnivals, Individual Divisionals and Individual All-Stars

  • This requirement can be waived only at the coaches’ discretion based
  • n extenuating circumstances.
  • Swimmers must attend their age group practices
  • Early morning make-up practices are available
  • Make-up practices are not geared toward specific age groups
  • No parents are allowed on the pool deck during practice. Please do

not talk to coaches during practice.

Equipment

  • Swimmers should bring the following items to

every practice:

 Swim cap  Clear or light colored goggles  Reflective or mirrored goggles  Fins  Water bottle

  • Please apply sunscreen to kids before practices

Swim-A-Thon

  • Will be held at Overlee on Saturday, June 10
  • Times are assigned by age group
  • 7 – 8 am

9-12 Age Group

  • 8 – 9 am

Seniors (13 & Over)

  • 9 – 10 am

8U and School of Fish

  • This is the primary fundraiser for the swim team. All

members of the Swim Team and School of Fish are encouraged to participate.

  • We will collect suits, caps and other swimming

equipment for the Marymount Future Saints Learn-to-Swim Program serving kids of low income families in Arlington and NoVA

  • Monday developmental meets (5 meets - begin June 26)
  • Saturday meets (5 meets - begin June 24)

Orange & White Meet

  • First swim meet of the season; held at Overlee on

Saturday, June 17

  • Swimmers may swim all events and establish seed times for

the upcoming season

  • Coaches use the times to plan for the first Saturday meet
  • If a swimmer can’t attend the O&W Meet, it is the swimmer’s

responsibility to notify the Team Reps immediately to have the absence pre-approved by the Coaches. A make-up session will be scheduled.

  • If a swimmer can’t attend the O&W Meet or a make-up

session, he/she will not be able to swim in a Saturday meet until seed times are established.

Saturday Meets

  • Competitive, scored meets that determine our standing

in Division 1

  • Fixed number of heats and limited entries
  • Coaches select swimmers for all Saturday Meets
  • Swimmers who are selected will receive an email on

Thursday night and a list will also be posted in the pool breezeway on Friday morning

  • Swimmer availability must be confirmed ASAP on

Thursday night

  • If a swimmer can’t attend a Saturday meet, the

swimmer should notify the Team Reps immediately

Divisional Relay Carnival & All-Star Relays

  • Held on two consecutive Wednesdays in July
  • Division Relay Carnival – July 12
  • All-Star Relays – July 19
  • Freestyle Relay and Medley Relay races only
  • Competitive, scored meets with a fixed number of entries
  • Coaches select swimmers
  • Division 1 Relay Carnival will be held at Overlee
  • We will need many volunteers for this meet!!
  • Relays are able to qualify for All-Star Relays based
  • n their performance at Divisional Relays

area pools

  • Developmental, unscored meets
  • Open to all swim team members

Parent Volunteers

  • Parent volunteers make the summer swim season

possible!!

  • It takes over 40 volunteers to run each meet; this does

not include volunteers for social activities and other team events

  • Sign-Up Genius is used to register for volunteer positions
  • Timers, Marshals, Runners, Water for Volunteers
  • Sign-Ups are available NOW on the overlee.org website
  • Many of the volunteer positions have been filled –

Swim Team

  • Swim team members must meet the following minimum

standards:

 Completion of 25 meters of Freestyle – head-first starts and side

breathing are required

 Completion of 25 meters of Backstroke – swimmer must remain

  • n their back for entire length of pool and finish on their back
  • For both freestyle and backstroke, swimmer must maintain a horizontal

body position at all times, swim the entire length of the pool without stopping, and may not stand, grab and/or pull on the lane lines.

 1 minute treading water with head above the water surface  9 and older – basic mechanics of Breaststroke and Butterfly

  • Swimmers who do not meet these standards will be

invited to join SOF or take lessons

  • Provides more individualized instruction for emerging

swimmers who are age 5 to 8 as of June 1

  • For safety reasons, School of Fish swimmers must meet the

following minimum standards:

 Completion of 25 meters of Freestyle  Completion of 25 meters of Backstroke  1 minute treading water with head above water surface

  • A dive, jump or start from in the water are permitted
  • There are no time standards for School of Fish
  • Coaches will be focused on moving swimmers from SOF to

Swim Team when they meet the Swim Team standards

  • Swimmers who do not meet these standards will

be invited to take swim lessons

  • All 8 & under swimmers must participate in a mandatory

pre-season assessment.

  • Please contact Team Reps if your child will be absent;

make-up times should be scheduled prior to the assessment

  • If your swimmer is registered for Swim Team and after

assessments the coaches determine that your swimmer does not meet the eligibility requirements for Swim Team, your swimmer will be placed on SOF. At that point if SOF is at capacity, your swimmer will be placed on the SOF waitlist in order of the registration date.
