  1. Outline • Additive Manufacturing – personal involvement • Industrial visits – Undergraduate & Postgraduate • Student graduations in the field • Curriculum development (Undergraduate study) • Research activities/collaborations

  2. Additive Manufacturing Involvements: Laser Metal Deposition and Functionally graded materials: • Titanium & its alloys (Ti6Al4V + TiC; Ti6Al4V + HAP and Ti6Al4V + Cu) • Stainless steels • Aluminium • Copper • Boron Carbide Grant holder of Rental pool grant of NLC-CSIR from 2011-2015

  3. Industry visits • National Laser Centre • Vaal University of Technology • Aerosud UG students visited Autonomous division & NLC UG & PG students @NLC

  4. Student graduations • An average of 6 to 8 undergraduate final year projects annually since 2011 – over 30 students • Graduated 4 Masters and 6 dissertations are under examination. 8 ongoing • 3 PhD graduates. 6 ongoing

  5. Curriculum development Advanced Manufacturing Systems 4A • Overview of the process & the associated technologies • Functionally Graded Material (FGM), • Its applications • Associated recent research focus areas

  6. Collaborations • National Laser Centre • Milwaukee School of Engineering, USA • University of Pittsburgh, USA • IIT, Kharagpur • IISC, Bangalore India • University of Sao Paulo, Brazil

  7. Research team As at March 2016: • 6 postdoctoral Fellows • 16 PhD candidates • 16 Masters candidates Over 70 publications in laser related field

  8. Summary • Additive manufacturing in the academia and UG teaching is still at an infancy stage • Additive Manufacturing is a global technology with a lot of relevance in the industry. • It is multidisciplinary. • There is a need for a group that will act as crusaders to champion its inclusion in the curriculum of the relevant courses for the country to fully reap from its enormous benefits.
