  • Helpful Hints – Lessons Learned: Spring 2019

4

  • It is a great idea to check your sessions for

accommodations prior to starting the session. It is much easier to fix accommodations before testing than after testing incorrectly.

  • Make sure students taking math tests have the

appropriate grade level calculator (Gr 6-8, Algebra I) Make sure your TAs notify the STC/DTC when something confusing happens. CONTACT THE MDE if you are unsure

  • f how to approach an issue.
  • Make sure text-to-speech works with the headphones

before the students get to item two. The end of the test is much too late…

Question Answer 1

What tests will be timed? English II and Algebra I are timed;

https://districtaccess.mde.k12.ms.us/studentassessment/Public%20Access/Statewide_Assessment_Programs/MAAP- Mississippi%20Academic%20Assessment%20Program/Assessment%20Guidance/MAAP%20Testing%20Times

Biology and U.S. History are not timed Grades 5 and 8 Science are timed at 180 minutes (3 hours).

2

Does accommodation 25 require MDE approval? No, prior approval is not required from MDE. This accommodation must be included in the student’s IEP, 501 Plan or LSP in order to be provided.

3

Can any student have the read aloud accommodation? No, Only students with the read aloud accommodation on their IEP, 504 Plan,

  • r LSP are allowed the read aloud accommodation on MAAP assessments.

4

What are the guidelines for ELA students with read- aloud accommodations? For ELA testing in Session 1:

  • Directions can be read in Grades 3-8 and English II
  • Passages CANNOT be read in Grades 3-8 and English II
  • Items CANNOT be read in Grade 3
  • Items CAN be read in Grades 4-8 and English II

For Sessions 2 and 3 in Grades 3-8 and English II

  • Directions and Prompts can be read to the students

For Grade 3: Students must have a human reader (NO TEXT-TO-SPEECH) The Read Aloud (Offline) must be selected: For Grades 4-8 and English II: Students may test with a human reader or Text- to-Speech options. See the MAAP Spring 2019 Test Administrator’s Manual for more details.

Question Answer 5

I realized I need a read-aloud

  • script. What should I do?

These scripts can be ordered through the testing companies. Your students should be scheduled to test after you receive these documents. The DTC is the

  • nly person that can order materials. See the TCM from Questar (ELA, Math,

Algebra) or DRC (Science grades 5, 8, Biology, US History). The DTC can call customer service from the respective testing company if you need more

  • information. DO NOT read over the students’ shoulders.

6

Is the US History test based on the new standards? No, the test for SY 2018-2019 is based on the 2011 Social Studies Framework. We are piloting the 2018 MS CCRS for Social Studies this year. We will change the test during SY 2019-2020 when the new standards are fully implemented.

7

If I need to report a test security issue, who would I email? Michael Martin is our Test Security Director in the Office of Student

  • Assessment. Please email testsecurity@mdek12.org

8

What if I have a student that breaks their dominant arm or injures their wrist before they are scheduled to test and cannot type or write? Can they have accommodations?

Students with a Temporary Physical Disability Resulting from an Illness or Injury Districts must complete the Accommodation Request Form and attach substantiating documentation signed by a licensed medical doctor (MD or DO) on official medical

  • stationary. The accommodation(s) requested must be appropriate to the type of temporary

disability that resulted from the injury or illness (i.e. scribe); Document this information in the Student Profile for the assessment. (Refer to the MAAP Test Coordinator Manual.) Since the Office of Student Assessment (OSA) must approve the specific accommodation(s) for a student, it is recommended that the district use the OSA approval for official documentation.

Question Answer 9

What steps need to be taken for Accommodation related resets? If a student’s assessment needs to be reset due to accommodations not being set in the testing platform, 1. Contact Questar/DRC to establish a reset ticket. 2. Upload a Test Reset Request Form with all supporting documents to the SharePoint (FOLDER: Security/2018-2019/9. Test Resets/ Vendor/ Admin). 3. Convene the IEP/504/LSP team to decide which option best suits the

  • student. Be sure to follow proper IEP/504/LSP meeting protocols. The team

should not make an addendum or changes to the IEP/504/LSP, but they will need to provide a formal decision on how to proceed in this situation (documentation may be formal meeting notes on district letter head).

  • The District Team options are
  • Leave the scores as is. All tests have been submitted and will be scored.
  • Invalidate the scores and not retest the student.
  • Reset the tests and test the students with the appropriate accommodations.

4. Notify OSA by email when documentation has been uploaded to SharePoint. Include Vendor Case Number and District Number in subject line. Do not email the reset forms or identifiable student information to OSA. Please ensure to complete step 4 ASAP to expedite the approval process. REMINDER: Resetting an assessment would erase all previously entered

  • responses. The student would be reassigned to the accommodated form, and the

student(s) would restart the test from the beginning.

Task Topic Status Update

1 Accessibility and Accommodations Informational Accommodations must be set in the INSIGHT administration site before a student begins testing. 2 Pausing for Breaks Informational If a student needs to leave the computer lab/classroom for a short break, the student should select the Pause button. A countdown, beginning with 20 minutes, appears on the screen notifying the student of the time left before the system automatically exits the test. If the test is not resumed within 20 minutes, the student must log back in using the information on his/her student test ticket to finish the test. 3 Transcribing Tests Informational After a student completes testing, the transcriber will copy the student responses from the accommodated edition of the test book into DRC INSIGHT. All responses must be transcribed into the online system. For more information, please see page 46 in TCM or page 43 in Grades 5 and 8 or EOC TAM. 4 Online Tools Training (OTT) Informational It will be very helpful for students to explore the OTT prior to testing. OTTs can be accessed via this link using a Google Chrome browser: https://wbte.drcedirect.com/MS/portals/ms/.
